Hepatitis diagnosis

Hi there
I had a liver test 3 months and my results were

Gamma gt levels - 134
ast - 56
alt - 83

I cut down on alcohol and took a test yesterday..the results were

Gamma gt levels - 60
ast - 55
alt - 101

I'm concerned that I have hepatitis....do these results indicate that?

Thanks

Hi bobo,

Your liver enzymes are high but that doesn't necessarily mean you have hepatitis.  The only way to know is get tested.  If you are positive for Hepatitis anitbodies, the next step is to test for viral load or active infection and genotype. Then you'll undergo a biopsy or fibroscan to determine level of liver damage.  The amount of damage will determine whether you can "watch and wait" for new treatments or non at all.  Do yourself a favor and find a good hepatologist, not just a gastroenterologist.

If you do have hepatitis B or C it can be successfully treated now and better, shorter treatments are on the horizon.  I had hepatitis C for 27 years, treated last year and cleared it.  I feel like a million dollars!

Good luck to you and come back often.  This forum is filled with caring and very knowledgeable members.

Hi Bobo,

It's almost impossible to tell by the results you posted whether or not you have viral hepatitis. You appear to have something that has your liver enzymes hopped up; you'll want to follow up with your doctor and see what's causing it. If you suspect you might have hepatitis due to lifestyle, etc, you probably want to have your doctor order a hepatitis screening panel to investigate. This will check to see if yo have developed antibodies to Hep A, B, and C- these are simple blood tests, and are relatively inexpensive. Probably a good idea to either quit or substantially reduce any alcohol consumption until you get this straightened out,

Bill

By the way; I have an uncle we call Bobo :o).

Hepatitis is a broad diagnosis that means inflammation of the liver.  Viral hepatitis is inflammation of the liver caused  by specific strains of virus.  Hepatitis C is one type of viral hepatitis.  You can be tested for antibodies to the various types of viral hepatitis.

Speak to your doctor about your concerns, and ask for antibody tests.  Good luck.
