High Bilirubin & SGPT(ALT) levels

by sysplex, Nov 12, 2007 12:01PM
Hi,

I have a cousin, 24 years of age, who has developed Jaundice two days back. I asked him to undergo blood tests and the following were the results,

a.  Bilirubin Total(Diazo)                                  -      5.9 mg/dl
b.  Bilirubin Direct(Diazo)                                 -      4.7 mg/dl
c.  Bilirubin(Indirect)                                        -      1.2 mg/dl
d.  SGPT(ALT) (IFCC)                                     - 2420.0 IU/L
e.  ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase) (DEA-Buffer)    -   283.0 IU/L
f.   GGTP (IFCC)                                             -  107.0 IU/L
g.  Serum Total Protein (Biuret)                        -     7.4 G/dl
h.  Serum Albumin (BCG)                                -     4.4 G/dl
i.   Serum Globulin                                          -     3.0 G/dl

I'm worried about his extremely high SGPT(ALT). Could someone let me know as to what might be the most probable cause & most importantly, effects of such extreme levels of SGPT(ALT)?

Thanks & Regards

I have never seen an ALT that high in my life. Has your cousin been tested for Hepatitis C?

Has your cousin been checked for HepC or had a liver biosy? From past experience with my husband and brother along with many others I've known they all had to have a liver biopsy to detect anything along with the labs, please do not speculate about anything it will make you go out of your mind, go in to see the physician and get results.
Good luck

An alt above 50 or so is elevated so a level of 2,420 is VERY high.  Something is seriously wrong with his liver.  Please get him to a doctor.  I'm sure he will test for hepatitis a,b and c.
