How to deal w/ abdominal pain caused by cyst?

I've been having abdominal spasms, and just got the results from my CT scan--I have a benign cyst on my spleen. The nurse said no treatment is necessary as long as it doesn't get any bigger (which is fine, I understand that's the normal course of action).

The part that bothers me.... Before we knew what was wrong, my doctor prescribed Norflex, a muscle relaxer commonly used to treat back pain. I didn't get the script filled because I wanted to know what was wrong first. Now that we know it's due to the cyst, not a muscle thing, it seems the muscle relaxers would be useless, right? Well, the doctor recommends continuing to take Norflex, but couldn't explain why. He rushed me off the phone. My pharmacist told me the relaxers most likely would not help because they're made to treat back problems and could cause other abdominal issues.

I want to get a second opinion from a specialist to see what the best course of action is for dealing with the pain--which specialists would deal with spleen issues? Should I just take the muscle relaxers? If the best course of action is to just deal with the spasms and do nothing, I think I'd rather do that than take some addictive muscle relaxers that most likely will not help my situation at all, but I could be way offbase here. WDYT?

Just curious . . . Can you describe the abdominal pain you have related to a cyst on your spleen.

My CT also revealed a "Mass" on my spleen. The radiology report said it may be a simple (fluid filled) cyst. PCP recommends another CT in six months. The CT also revealed two cysts on my liver (one of which I knew about), an adrenal mass, and another cyst on one of my kidneys. I guess I'm a cyst making machine.

I do have pain in my right upper quadrant which my hepatologist says is from the cyst. It's a dull aching pain but occasionally I would get a stabbing pain that pulsed on and off for a few minutes then goes away. I believe the aching pain is the pain you get from an enlarging liver and the stabbing pain is from the cyst/s.

I also get the same occasional stabbing pain on my left side (nearly identical to the right side pain). About four inches up from the bottom of my ribcage. Pretty much where my spleen is (behind the stomach).

This really bothers me because when I get them, it usually doubles me over.

I'd be interested to hear more on you aches & pains.

Take care . . . DoMusic

I get spasms in the upper left quadrant.  They come on really quickly and usually only last between a few seconds to a minute.  It feels like having a charlie horse, except in my stomach instead of my calf.  It makes me double over and I have to force myself to stretch in order to get rid of the pain.

Did your doctor have any thoughts/recommendations about the pain?
