Human to non-human transmission?

Human to non-human transmission?

On the surface this sounds like a stupid question...but after a couple of years dealing with HCV I'm coming to believe that anything can happen with this disease.

Our dog was at the vet today who said that he had elevated liver functions...the first thing I thought was is it possible to give this to an animal?

Cute...I'm serious with this question.

I don't know about everyone else but I'm freaked out about infecting my family and friends.  I wonder when I pick rasberries, play with the kitten, cut wood....on and on and on.

What does the dog dine on? I know dogs can get fatty liver. Cats and dogs can have high enzymes.

Time for a doggy liver diet.

No, there is no way you can pass HCV to your dog!

unless you are shooting up with the dog or something totally off the wall.

I like to think that I'm fairly educated about HCV but never thought of this.

There was this dude I used to work with that had a big booming voice, a big bristly beard and he always wore this greasy "Red Man" hat. He also drove a '73 Nova with a 307 quadrajet 4 barrel, and a thrush glasspack muffler (with an AM radio and a coffee cup holder, too). Anyway, he said that AIDS came from the jungle by "qu33rs" (his words, not mine) who were "humping monkeys". He was a great guy but, y'know...I always wondered about the gay guy/monkey theory. His Nova was kinda cool though.

Anyway, I've since learned that maybe my old workmate was a wiser man than I gave him credit for. I shoulda known, what with the impeccable taste he had in cars and his extreme fashion sense.

I have a very sick cat.  This is for real.  I have spent over $1,000 in tests to find out what is wrong with her.  She is only 4 yrs old and has never been outside.  One of the tests the vet gave her was for feline HIV.  I was told there is no animal HCV, but who knows?

That said, I have 3 dogs and another cat all of whom are as healthy as they can be.

What about fleas or mosquitoes that bite one species and then another.  I think I heard this was ruled out for HIV when there was a big scare about that.  Must not be true or everyone would have it right?

Oh goodness. Sorry your doggie has elevated enzymes.  I would say no - that the enzymes up are not because your dog may have contracted Hep from you.  My life has always been animal rich. I've had hep for 32 years.  All of my family, including my son (who I carried while I had Hep, who was born to me when I had Hep, and who nursed when I had hep, never got Hep - no household transmission in 19 years (he's now 25 and is Hep free).  All of our pets lived have lived well past the "average age" for a dog or cat.  Our cats ?  Some lived to be 18 and 19 yrs old.  The last dog I lost was 16 years old.  The two laying on the floor right now and the cats curled up on the couch look like they're doing fine :)

I hope your dog will be ok. I agree with whoever said that the enzymes in dogs can be elevated for many reasons - diet, fatty liver, but I don't think you have a thing to worry about in the Hep transmission dept from you to your dog.  Vets can do "overkill".  Well in my opinion they can.  And that's not to say your dog doesn't need a good workup at ALL.  But, I wouldn't be too worried about these elevated enzymes unless your dog is sickly, and if he/she is - I don't think it's Hep at ALL - not from you.

And the transmission to your family or friends - yeah that is scary, but if you take the precautions like covering your wounds and not letting anyone use your razor or toothbrush, your family/friends should be AOK.  I can recall a bunch of times (after diagnosis) I thought for sure one of my loved ones probably had contracted Hep from me from prior years from household transmission, or from sex, but they had not.  My parents? They're in their mid-80s, and I've been their caregiver for over two years - live in. I do the cooking, I clean fish, shrimp, I have taken splinters out, do footcare, cut hairs, hard yard work, have seen blood on my hands before and felt freaky, but all is OK.  Bandaids. It HAS to be YOUR blood into their blood stream.  Remember that.  And your dog?  Please don't worry!

Best of luck

Sorry, don't know anything about SSD but others have posted about it. Maybe you can do a search or post again when the system is working correctly.

All the best,

hi miked, sorry to hear about your dog not being well. i guess the elevated enzymes can be several differnt things, who knows, but cushings disease you may want to check her for, if the vet hasn't already.

my dog is our baby, so i know it is horrible when they get sick, let us know how your dog is when the vet finds out.

hope it winds up being nothing, good luck.

Something strange with the posts. A lot of duplicates.
Blank
Avatar_f_tn
You are right about duplicated posts. For some reason it will not take my post. It is off the subject but do you or anyone know anyone who has been on Long Term Disability and then approved for Social Security Disability? I have been told that SSD will retroactively pay you for the waiting period most insurance companies have, usually 6 mths., and if LTD has been paying you their adjusted rate, if SSD decides on a smaller amount, you must then repay the difference to LTD? I seem to be very confused about this?

What is happening is that the system does take the first post even though it says it doesn't. Trick is not to post again. The other issue is that the new posts don't show up on the main screen.

that is bizarre, my dog had that one time too and i also thought he contracted hep from me...

my vet said no way, it was probably because of how many horrible and nasty things he ingests all the time... he will eat anything haaa

Has anyone contacted Cindy about this double post issue? When I post, it says error. So I post again and it says error. If I ignore the error message, it shows up but not on the main page. So do we push the abuse button?

I figure if my kids (who I gave birth to while being hcv pos) didn't get it.........the chance of giving it to my dog is pretty darn slim.

I just had to delete something off of here that would have freaked some people out...a bad tasteless joke that involved peanut butter (some will get that).

:)  I can't help myself.  I'm incorrigible.

Considering that hcv is such a relatively newly discovered virus, I wouldn't be suprised if there hasn't been much research on the subject yet. Just look at us? Aren't we basically guinea pigs testing these meds...relatively speaking, timewise?

My mother used to say "Let the dog lick your cut, it'll heal faster"
who knows????

Canine hepatitis is an entirely different entity.

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1556&articleid=405

Some dogs can have elevated liver enzymes simply from mild dehydration and a myriad of other causes.

I don't know about human to non-human transmission, but maybe what we're now experiencing is human to computer transmission of the virus. Please folks, if you're infected and have bleeding fingers, at least wear gloves if you're going to work on the computer :)

Yes, I have heard of dogs getting high liver counts and I'm one of them.  This Beagle Bailey has to get this checked out, it is not just for humans anymore!!!! YIPS!!!

All kidding aside, yes dogs and other animals do get high liver counts from many things.  They can get it from meds, things they eat, etc.  They get everything we get, so why not hepaptis C???  Who know's how clean the vets keep their office or if needles are reused for shots.

Miked, I hope your dog is alright.  Let us know what you find out but I dought that if he does have it, he got it from you.

I read that they 'created' some mice that can be infected with HCV and are now used for research.  In the normal world, humans and chimps are the only unfortunate ones so far to be harboring hcv, as you said.

Been traveling...thanks guys.  I poked myself several years ago with a pitchfork and I caught this dog licking up some of my blood off the ground which is why I wondered.  Again, somedays having this disease freaks me out; most days I'm very rational.

chcnme....thanks for your post.  We too love animals; at this moment we have two dogs and four cats (one in my lap right now).
