If UND is it possible to get life insurance?? Sorry grim subject!

My husband found out that he had Hep C when he applied for life insurance. Does anyone know if it is possible to get life insurance after being diagnosed with HCV ?  How about if you are UND after a certain amount of time?  Thanks again !!

Ditto!!....Chronic, not terminal. Big difference.

Insurance Co.'s will have you wait
anywhere from 2-5 years depending on the disease.
Some won't insure you at all.

Some have other existing conditions besides the Hep,
and that makes it even harder to get life insurance.

My life insurance policy is for term coverage for 1/2 million.

I told my agent about my HCV status and asked if I could raise it to $1M and/or convert the policy to whole life and up it to $1M.

Allstate's answer was yes, I can convert the policy to whole life and increase the amount to $1M...at the cost of $350 per month.

In two weeks I'll have my 24 week post tx blood draw from the Prove 3 VX950 trial.  I was UND at post tx week 12 and pray that I will still be UND 24 week post tx which is considered cured.

I asked my agent the question again and he's checking into it.  He did say something about a waiting period (like 2 years post tx UND with normal liver functions).

So,  at a price you can get insurance.  I'm not sure what all factored into it....my age, non-smoker, 25+ year customer.....

Thank you!

I agree with you... we don't have a terminal disease.  It's certainly chronic if left untreated...

HCV is not classic "terminal disease" i.e. late stage aggressive cancers, etc.

I am not sure I agree with your statements.  I have gotten two life insurance policies, starting at two years after SVR, with major carriers.  I did the full physical for both, and gave them ALL my medical history and physician references.  I am pretty sure that after five years SVR almost ALL carriers will insure you.

Second, I was not aware that HCV was considered a 'terminal disease, even if you beat it'???  I am not sure it is always terminal even in those who do not treat, or clear the virus.  Supposedly only a percentage will die from HCV.  And what of the SVR's, and spontaneous clearers?  I do not think that ANYBODY classifies them as having a 'terminal disease'.  In fact they are now considered 'CURED' by the medical community.

The reply was a little bit too 'bleak' in my opinion.

There are a few companies which will insure you for life insurance if you have been undetected for 2 years AND have normal liver function tests for 2 years.  At least, that is what I was told when I inquired about it.

I fortunately have kept up with my premiums from a policy that I got 5+ years ago at my job, back when I was working full time.  Like NYG, it will just cover burial and then, maybe a tiny bit over that?   I guess it will depend on how much get buried costs whenever I do die.  It's for $18,000.   I suppose that would cover my getting buried in the cheapest of boxes!  One would think so.

There are online insurance carriers that say they will cover you.

I, in an HCV fog, let all mine lapse one way or another. I now have a several again: the trick was to take jobs for a year that came with life insurance, get another job,  and then keep it afterward. Also many places of employment have an open period that let you join up without disqualification.

then again, others have just been denied denied denied. SO your results may vary.

Good luck

No - we can't it's a terminal disease even if you beat it and only have the antibodies present.

It stinks. Thank God I have enough to bury me from my job...that only means I have to stay here until I die and never retire! Ugh!
