Infergen - Differenc e in TX

I have been wondering recently - IF IFF IFFFFF my tx does not work out right with I would like to learn about the daily infergen shots.

Of course don't anybody get your panties in a twist I AM proceding with my tx and expecting to WIN..but I always approach things with a good back up plan at work and in life and would like to learn about this because my doctor (not being the hippiest cat in the cathouse) doesn't believe there is any other form of treatment except Peg-Int/Riba combo.

Can anyone who is on this give me some facts and a good place to start my just in case situation backup file?

I'd appreciate any input.

Better safe and knowledgable than sorry and ignorant is my new motto!  :)

Of hand, I seem to recall that McGill University in Montreal developed for HCV research a specially bred mice and possibly rats several years ago.

I thought the only mammals that can be infected with hep c are humans and chimps, what other animals are infected? mice? how else could they work on a vaccine using mice?

New vaccine for Hepatitis C in development
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Researchers say a new vaccine being tested on mice may one day help in the fight against hepatitis C.
A team at the University of Saskatchewan's Vaccine and Infectious
Disease Organization has produced a vaccine candidate that decreased the amount of a carrier virus expressing hepatitis C virus -- HCV -- protein in mice by 100,000 times compared to the control

U of S researchers discover possible hepatitis C vaccine
Activated cells 'teach'other cells to kickstartbody's immune system

Wednesday, January 11, 2006

Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have found a possible vaccine for hepatitis C.
Better yet, the innovative way the vaccine works could help people who already have the disease get better, as well as prevent it, researchers say.
There is no vaccine for hepatitis C, which lasts a lifetime in most people it infects.

What that article from a real and reliable news source?  When the best that an Eli Lily spokesperson (probably has the job to hype products) can say is "Pacifex is the only placebo that's green and shaped like a triangle", you kind of wonder if that article is tongue-in-cheek.

The cost of treatment was never $150K. Your friend was misinformed. The cost today is the same as it was 2 years ago and the cost of medications has little to do with the electronics market until a patent has expired and a there is a genetic product becomes available. I suspect when and if VX950 hits the street it will be named

Like your doc says, gobs of vaseline works about as good as anything, maybe better because of its viscocity, and it's real cheap.

For the hands (or feet) I often cover them with cotton gloves or socks after applying the vaseline and keep them on during the night.

Like most moisturizes, vaseline is more effective after hydrating as it doesn't so much add moisture as retain it , i.e. use right after shower or bath.

When I don't have the time or desire to water myself down, I mix some water right in the vaseline jar and so some water goes on the skin with the vaseline.

The problem I've found with some of the other moisturizes is that sensitive skin can become inflamed by some of the components. For example, in my case I found that moisturizes containing menthol were OK for the itching but agravated my rash, especially on the more sensitve areas like the face.

I buy so much vaseline at my local drugstore that I'm starting to get looks of awe from the women at the counter (and some of the men.) :)

Glad you're making progress, doing well, and communicating with your doc.

It's "Jen", as in "generate WBC".  You will win.  Man I'm 20/24 and worn out.  Also, another 24 buddy of mine said that 7 months p-tx he feels fab, but now has to go on diet!

But that HCVets brain study article makes me think that even the most SVR of us may someday be getting a spinal tap and maybe some newfangled  monocyte or other cell-type antiviral drugs to clear out our central nervous system where those evil negative replicants  may well lurk, and maybe post-tx, hence my big idea.

checking in before bedtime,
I see you wait until the lights were off at MH to come tip toeing. Sounds like a very productive visit and one flexible provider. You are in good hands.

See if you can get a cream made with eucerin, glycerin and lactic acid, plus urea. It is one of the best emollients and moisturizing mix a dermatologist can reccommend. the urea brings moisture to the surface where it is retained. Ulactin is a good mix, if they had a cream it would be better for the hands. The lotion is ok for the body mostly.

good night

Hey gang Busy day. Thanks for all your good wishes and advice yesterday.
Doc's visit went pretty well. Guy gets the biggest smile when I answer his first question. ..Yup, doc, still sober. He was there with me through bouncing in and out of detoxes almost monthly, he figures the booz'll kill me faster than hep or anything.
At first it sounded like he was suprised I'd had a 12wk pcr, but he was okay with it. Thinkin maybe the nurse forgot to point it out being as she approved it when he wasn't there? Doesn't matter. Anyhow he was real happy with it. For one he thought being as my 5mos pre tx VL had been 18.7million and my VL had been going up 6 to 7 million every 6mos prior to that maybe 12wk was even better than we thought at 291,000. Not to mention knockin off the 18.4ml. I discussed(diplomatically - goof) the studies regarding extending tx for better SVR percentages in my case. His take was 'well I tell ya what-we'll look at the 24wk(which will be the next one), I told you you were doing the whole 12mos anyways, if things look right I got no problem making it 18mos. I'm glad your talking to others and getting support but I don't want you getting wound up in mind games with numbers.' He does know me i guess.
Right now he figures with all the people he's treated that I'd be in the top 10% for luck and tolerabilty with sx. But wants to keep an eye on that before any commitments w/extension.
He's concerned about the mood swings and irritability(knowing my past, he said... listen hang in there if you want, but if it gets worse you tell me and we go to ADs. He wasn't into discussing higher Riba being as I lost 15lbs in last few weeks.

His advice for my hands and the itching-(Echoed Jim) nothing else is workin much, just stick with gobs of vaseline, the petroleum jelly is best at retaining the moisture. Use a body oil in the shower for same reason. Solarcaine spray is fine for instant relief but DON'T use the Zim's with the SDA3c. Also I can go back to using protein supplements reasonably. Drew my cbc's and all too. Nurse holds up the needle and says- hmmm, trying to remember if you apologised for your hissy fit about pcr...

Other than that took my Dad to a wake for his 93yro brother. I'll be a pall bearer in AM. Thanks in advance for condolences but save the posts. He had a great long life(despite driving me to Florida when he was 68 and I was 28).Spent alot of time here with my Dad and us-that leaves 7 of the original 12kids from my Dad's family left-all between 76 and 96 so this is just life as usual in big families. Oh and my car overheated in the rain, like I said, life as usual.
Stay Well All, right now I need sleep, a fresh pressed shirt, and oh yea...antifreeze

The current retail cost for combo therapy drugs are about $45,000(48-wk) according to my paperwork. 2 to 3 years ago I had a friend go through it and was cost out about $150,000. Just like anything when it's new; remember when dvd players used to be expensive.
Last October the L.A. Times reported that there were more than 24 new HCV treatments being developed. The more the merrier, healthy competition will bring the price down. Also don't you think it's a little suspicious the name of a drug that isn't even approved yet is getting so much press.
Billions of dollars are now being spent on marketing drugs, there's even tv ads. The drug companies are now going after patients, it's not enough to give doctors kick backs and freebies to push their products. Vertex wants the name VX-950 stuck in everyones head. So that the next wave of HCV treaters will be asking for their drug by name. Just think about it. Peace

With the infergen tx I find that I get them all the time.  When they happen, I take 2 Valtrex @ 1000 mg each - 2 in the a.m and 2 at night and they DISAPPEAR!  I find its the only thing that helps.

For those of us who may/will fail current tx; promising new drugs give alot of hope.  I dont have a clue about pricing them, but there is such a huge demand out there, a fortune can be made even at loss-leader prices.
I, for one, am looking forward to the stuff.
