Injection problem or not??

Injection problem or not??

I just got back from my 2 wk.labs this a.m  and  when I gave my self the injection there we noticed that there was quite a bit of blood leaked out after removal. The study nurse who watched the injection said that was ok that I must have come back up thru a capilary on the way out. I had as instucted by her pulled back on the plunger initially and there was no blood. Obviously being new to doing the inj. I was wondering if there is blood like that does that mean  some of the drug also leak out? I didn"t ask her as only thought of it on the way out. Would appreciate your replys

Same happened to me at the first "instructional" injection and my nurse also said it was ok, as there was no blood in the syringe when pulled back. She gave the same explanation. You are fine.

Agree with sunshine, even if the medication leaked out it would not be enough to make on bit of difference.  As info, I quit pulling the plunger back after the first injection.  I found it awkward trying to maneuver the syringe while the needle was stuck in my belly  and even if I seen blood I wouldn't have wasted the shot.

One thought is to wait for a ten count before you remove the needle from the injection site; this gives the fatty tissue a moment to absorb the medication. After years of injecting insulin, I found leaving the needle in place like that for a few seconds helped prevent the meds from oozing out.

Best of luck—

I agree with the others, and also with Bill because my doctor also told me to count to 10 before taking the needle out.. Good luck!!

Also, we had a thread a while back on this. The concensus was, that most people who have done this once or twice no longer bother to pull back on the plunger at all. It just make the process more complicated.

My nurse never even mentioned pulling back.

I just pinch up some fat, go in at an angle of > 60 degrees (usually perpendicular) and fire away. Let it sit for 5 or 10 secs, then pull it out and toss a dot band-aid on it so I can find it the next day.

Thanks again for all the great input. Sounds like  leave it in a little longer is the plan!

Sounds like you're doing fine.  There have been a number of times when there's been a little blood after my husband's injections, but I've been told it's not a concern, just little capillaries in the skin.  And I remember obsessing about the shots (I obsessed about EVERYTHING :) ... would it leak between the syringe and needle? would it leak out of the skin? what about what's left in the syringe?) , especially the first month, and was told unlikely scenarios, and even if there were such occurrences, it would not be enough to matter.  It DOES get easier and more comfortable as the weeks go.  Welcome to forum, and best of luck on your treatment.  ~eureka
