Interesting Viral Removal Device In Trials

Just saw a piece on CNN and googled it thinking WTH is this? Looks legit. Sorry if it has already been discussed and I missed it.

Aethlon Medical Discloses Strategy to Commercialize Hemopurifier(R) in India

Aethlon's commercialization strategy in India will focus on viral conditions of greatest concern to its citizens, and opportunities to offer treatment access to the Hemopurifier® within India's growing medical tourism industry. Targeted conditions include Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis-C (HCV). At present, regulatory barriers specific to the Hemopurifier® do not exist in India. As a result, the opportunity for Aethlon to commercialize its technology within the country will be based on obtaining clinical data sufficient to drive practitioner acceptance in the marketplace. As such, Aethlon will initiate further studies that demonstrate patient safety and support the Hemopurifier® as a single use device designed to remove viral pathogens from blood.

This would be could if you have a huge viral load and can get it to zero. At the same time use SOC or the newer DAAs.

why not just have a simultaneous blood transfusion and blood letting at the same rate?

this is nothing new. the concept has been used before. there has been similar blood cleansing devices, one i have read about circulates the blood out and exposes it to ultraviolat light to kill virus & bacteria. do not hear much more about it so maybe it did not work? anyway it is good to hear anything new about tx options. this is the only way a cure will come along someday, process of elimanation.

when you have time , i wish you would post on the other side esp if it will benefit the group and it sounds like it would......

Been bopping in occasionally to stay up with how everyone is doing and stay current with what is going on with treatment options.

Not treating. Long story regarding the Wyeth 796 trial that may be of benefit to our group, but most of story belongs on the other side. Trial nurse was awesome and actually told me to walk away at the appointment that I was to begin.

Studies suggest low pre-tx viral load correlates positively with SVR. On the other hand,  I believe 'Sonic' referenced an article not to long ago that inferred it wasn't the low viral load that furthered SVR, but that low viral load might correlate with less virulent viral strains, which therefore result in more SVRs.

But in any event, since nothing seems conclusive (welcome to the world of HCV treatment) a device that purports to decrease the HCV viral load has interesting implications at least an adjunct to SOC. Assuming of course, that this device can demonstrate a safety profile that meets rigorous standards. "Do no Harm" comes to top of mind.

So yes, assuming the device will 'do no harm' , and assuming that Aethlon medical is a credible company (have no knowledge one way or another), then I hope they do spend the time and money to do this correctly and develop some useful clinical data that might be of benefit to all of us. If not, it may just end up as a  questionable item on the menu for medical tourists to India.

Hmmmm --- ok - you go first. LMAO!

Nah - sounds interesting but a bit like the "leech" bleeding method...

I'm thinking I would have a hard time --- just me, mind you - of pumping my blood in and out of my body.

But I do like new inventions and possible cures for the world.

Yes. More info and scientific papers, etc., at their site. That's the first thing that popped into my head, but they know that as well and probably more than we ever will. Sounds like the army is doing some testing with the device.

Aethlon Medical has developed a patented extracorporeal device, known as the Hemopurifier, to address the treatment of viral conditions that are either resistant or evolve resistance to drug and vaccine therapies. The Hemopurifier converges the established scientific principals of hollow-fiber dialysis and affinity chromatography with the discovery of affinity agents that selectively bind envelope viruses. The result is an affinity treatment cartridge that separates and captures circulating viruses, viral proteins, and toxins before the occurrence of cell and organ infection. The treatment goal is to reduce viral load burden without drug toxicity so that the patient's natural immunity can recover to wage an effective battle against viral infection. However, the mechanical nature of the Hemopurifier also allows it to be deployed in conjunction with other therapies including drugs and vaccines, if available. An additional benefit stems from treatment access, as the Hemopurifier has been designed for utilization in the global infrastructure of dialysis and continuous renal replacement machines already present in hospitals and clinics.
Scientific articles classify the Hemopurifier to be both an immunotherapy and fusion inhibitor treatment. The Food And Drug Administration (FDA) has indicated that the Hemopurifier will be treated as a Class III Medical Device in U.S. regulatory submissions. Pre-clinical human blood studies have documented the effectiveness of the Hemopurifier in capturing HIV (The AIDS Virus), HCV (Hepatitis-C), and Orthopox Viruses related to human Smallpox. The mechanism of capture has been shown to be via the polysaccharide chains that reside on the surface glycoproteins of envelope viruses. Since the polysaccharide portions of the viral glycoproteins are attached via normal host cell (functions not under control of the virus), they are highly invariant. Moreover, the high abundance of polysaccharides allows viruses to escape immune surveillance. Thus, while many viral proteins are highly variable in their primary structure, the polysaccharide chains are nearly invariant, allowing for the capture of all strains and clades of many viruses. In fact, lectin derived affinity agents immobilized within the Hemopurifier have been shown to inhibit the growth of all tested strains of HIV and can capture of inhibit the growth of other envelope viruses including SIV, FIV, HCV, Measles, Mumps, Influenza, Ebola, Marburg, and Orthopox viruses. Recent studies indicate that the Hemopurifier affinity agent is also able to capture Dengue hemorrhagic fever virus. In conclusion, the Hemopurifier has expansive therapeutic capabilities that address: global pandemics (HIV-AIDS); chronic infectious diseases (Hepatitis-C); naturally evolving pathogens; and pathogens weaponized for bioterrorism attacks against U.S. military and civilian populations.

It's a filter system?

Hmmm could work --- but tissues and organs also hold the virii - and that would mean although the blood would be clean it would be recontaminated once it circulated.

But --- on that note - if you continuously did it - it would conceivably keep you healthier.

I don't know much about it - anyone else have thoughts?

Is it a filtering system?
