Irritable bowel syndrome/dairy products?

Irritable bowel syndrome/dairy products?

Good Morning All,
I went to see my primary doc he ordered an ultra sound and a chest x-ray. Then he left for the day and instructed me to see the after hour doc, once I left radiology.  I get to radiology and the girl wants to argue with me that the only thing odered was a chest x-ray.  No, I came here for a pain in my front side; that would be the abdomin (abdomen). I waited about an hour and arguing the whole time about what was ordered and waiting for someone to do the ultra sound to get there.  Then off to the after hour doc (which I might add was a blessing in disquise).  He knew more about my treatment, the medication and the side effects than my hep doc has even come close to showing me. I was very tempted to ask this doc if he wanted to treat me.

Anyway, everything vapor locked in me causing so much pressure you could not touch my stomach in that area.  He gave me zantac and tums. He wonder why I was doing dairy with my meds and that it does not make sense to take it, if the meds cause this side effect.  Also wanted to know if I could break the doseage of 600mg 2x a day to 400mg 3x day. So, I will call hep doc today and get his response. First off his office is Gastrology; you would think they would have picked up on the systems being where they were and that IBS is another side effect to meds and seen me
I was very close to calling it quit last night. If it would not have been for the final doc and encouragement I would have, until I sought out another hep doc. My next office vist with him will not just be 15 minutes; because we are going to talk; major talk

Well if the dairy is bothering you why don't you stop it and use something else with "fat" for the riba?

I haven't had any side effect and I take a ton of dairy with my meds...I am so sorry that you have!  But definitely if something is bothering you why take it?

Tx is hard enough already!

you gave me a scare - glad you went and got it sorted out, when they say take your riba with fat, it doesn't mean it has to be dairy or animal fat, nuts, peanut butter etc.  can be used in place of dairy

Hi,

That after Dr. sounds pretty good, hope your feeling better.  I had alot of stomach problems as you all may remember for about a week, didn't take dairy with my meds but I know I didn't have enough good fat as many have pointed out and had lost 12 lbs. in a week. I have changed this since being home and since Sat. have regained 6 lbs.

I hope you find out what's causing your problem.

I'm so glad I'm feeling better, thought I was going to die.  Can not believe I gained 6 lbs. back already.  I think I need to stay home but I can't, have to stay in NY for the tx, Dr.'s orders.  But I can come home every few weeks.

I posted to you I think below.

I thought dairy was on the list of foods to avoid if you have liver probs? Except yogurt? I am not an expert and currently trying to eat better before I go on tx if I do go on tx.  ANy other diet advice?  I havent eaten red meat in years.

Ah Beagle my heart is just so happy for you I could cry!  What a WONDERFUL thing it is coming back from the "dead feeling". Doesn't it make you go wow I used to feel this GREAT and I never knew it or appreciated it before?  :)

I wish I could make a huge smile face here but I have no idea how!

Dancegirl - I eat dairy even though it's probably not the "best" thing in the world it really has helped me keep from losing TOO much weight (at 14 pounds down and skinny to start I did not want to lose more) so it has benefitted me greatly.  Yogurt is dairy just the same as milk or anything really - no difference but I do take my Riba in the morning with it :)

NOBODY can get me to stop eating ice cream right now ;-)

I am still eating dairy, esp. full fat yogurt with my beloved Riba. I honestly believe a moderate amount of dairy is OK. I crave it, it helps my nausea, and calcium is good for me. Everything in moderation-unless of course something makes you as an individual sick-like Cajun perhaps.

Thanks for all of your post and concerns.  I will go to Cosco and get me a hugh bag of almonds and other assorted nuts.  Almonds and cashews are my favorite.
The only other time I had pain in my stomach like that was when I got food poisoning from a bad Lobster (seafood the worst), and was bent over for 3 days.
I had been craving milk lately and of course Ice Cream; that will be the hardest.  Like you NYGIRL, I love my ice cream, the creamier the better.  Boo Hoo.  But better not to eat than to hurt.
I will also go back to my fresh fruit smoothies with fruit juices and add almonds.

VEGAS777:

The first thing they thought was my gall blatter.  I am so glad it was not that.  I know you have to take care of yours.  If that is the pain you feel at times; my heart goes out to you.  Hope you will have yours fixed soon enough and all that will be behind you.

Busy at work, will check in later.

I for one feel that there are too many people eating too much dairy here in this country...any time you see this amount of allergy, it's because it's just too much, I know people who seem to exist on dairy ...there are people who are lactose intolerant and just don't know it....now before I get mob jumped, ha ha...

there are people who seem to be able to handle dairy better then others...but cows are just given so many meds, hormones and things, TO ME, especially with a slightly diseased liver.. it's just been a good idea to cut out dairy with a few exceptions (once in awhile)...since I did cut most of it out, my chronic sniffling, allergies, etc have been much, much better...the stuff does cause mucus and gas....(ech, sorry for the nose visual)

Now meds cause gas as well, these things screw with the stomach lining...so for SOME PEOPLE, eating a lot of dairy along with these meds might not be such a good idea....

Call me crazy, but I love dairy (many times we are allergic to things we crave, ask at any AA meeting) and have replaced it with goats! I use goat milk, goat yogurt and goat cheese....to me it tastes just as good if not better...also I use a little soy milk...but this can also cause gas for some people so you have to experiment....there are usually a lot of things we can substitute if we just investigate, my take...hope this helps....

I did notice today, that after taking my meds I did not have as much mucus form.  I have never been lactose intollerant.  I have always been a hugh cheese eater.  Those days are gone, at least for now.  I have never tried goats milk and/or products.  I will let things settle down in my stomach and maybe give it a try later.

The last doc to see me yesterday said about 90% of medications can not be taken with milk/dairy; it is like a poison in itself. So his advice was to stop.

Thanks for the info.

I just received this from my youngest sister today.  Her and I are very close; she is not just my sister, she is my best friend.

There are down times for all of us, and I know you're having one now.  Nothing I could say would make the problems go away or make them easier for you to cope with.  So let's just talk about a wonderful person...YOU.  I know that whatever burden life hands you, you'll be strong enough to carry... whatever obstacle you find in your path, you'll be tough enough to overcome... whatever decisions your're faced with, you'll be wise enough to make the right choice... Please promise me you'll remember these things about yourself.  Then, no matter what may happen, you'll always be able to handle it... I know you will... I believe in you.

Just thought I would pass this along to all of us here. It is the little things in life (like this) that lift my spirits and keeps me moving forward.

Man, I got postin fever today, ha ha...better get back to work! thanks for the lovely sentiment, I can see that you are a very nice lady and I'm so sorry that you are having troubles right now, seems that most troubles clear up for most people though...

As far as the trouble on this board, please don't let it get to you and just pay attention to anything positive you can glean from the posts, there are a lot of very informed people here who also give lots of support...and the trouble always seems to blow over until, of course, it blows back in again, ha ha!

and of course there are so many types of people and types of personalities...there are bound to be flare ups, hep c and otherwise - if it's not closely moderated...but this is not a closely moderated type of board and if someone doesn't like this fact, there are other boards that are, that goes for me too when I complain of this fact....

I have to hand it to the moderators because of course if they do delete a post (or poster), they get heat, if they don't delete a post, they get heat...in the end it's up to them how this board is run (whether I agree with everything here or not) and I have to applaud their efforts in having to read all this day after day...it certainly would test my patience at times, ha ha!
