Is Hepatitis B commonly an STD? What about Hepatitis C?

Is Hepatitis B and C an STD? If so, why was it not tested for when I went for a full panel test from the city?

HepB is an STD. Its very easy to transmit sexually.
HepC is not considered an STD. While its possible to transmit HCV sexually its an unlikely transmission method. HCV requires blood to blood contact.
While HCV has been found in other body fluids, there is no evidence that it has been transmitted through anything other than blood.

Ahhh = CS --- but HEPB is not only an STD - it's transmitted through all bodily fluids --- and can be transmitted through sexual contact.

But dang boi - you do so rock.

Yep forgot about them other body fluids. Shoulda mentioned its a BBV.
But prachanter only asked if HepB&C were STDs.
Apart from sharing blood I think sexual transmission is the easest way to catch HepB.

The following is from the CDC. http://www.cdc.gov/std/treatment/2006/rr5511.pdf. Page 73.

In adults, only approximately half of newly acquired HBV infections are symptomatic, and approximately 1% of reported cases result in acute liver failure and death. Risk for chronic infection is inversely related to age at infection: approximately 90% of infected infants and 30% of infected children aged <5 years become chronically infected, compared with 2%–6% of adults.

Among persons with chronic HBV infection, the risk for premature death from cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is 15%–25%.

HBV is efficiently transmitted by percutaneous or mucous membrane exposure to infectious blood or body fluids that contain blood.
The primary risk factors that have been associated with infection among adolescents and adults are unprotected sex with an infected partner, unprotected sex with
more than one partner, MSM, history of other STDs, and illegal injecting-drug use.

The Chronic HBV & HCC rates are interesting ay.
Me thinks a bit of cut and paste occurs with the primary risk factors for HepB&C.
The HepB risk factors sound awfully familiar, but at least there accurate for HepB.

With these risk factors "unprotected sex with more than one partner, MSM, history of other STDs"
Makes you love stats dont it. How can you catch it if none of the above have it?

It this forum that rocks, and you.

Hep b is a classic Std, very easily transmitted through sexual activity.  The window period for hep b 1 to 9  weeks for antibodies to show up on a test.

Hep c can be transmitted sexually but is an inefficient way to do so.  Much more likely from blood to blood contact.

Not more likely to be tramitted by blood to blood, its the only way to catch it.
No solid evidence to support any other transmission method.
