Itching... strange

by Pinksmything, Dec 24, 2007 02:23PM
Everything I have read said my husband would probably start itching when he started treatment. Greg was very nervous about this as he has been itching for years.... Really itching!
When he had his first tx he stopped itching.  Now 3 days later he's starting to itch again.
Is this normal?  He was hoping the itching would completely stop since he had a few days of relief. When and if he goes UND will the itching stop then or does the treatment make him itch even thought his liver is responding?   Janet

One of the most common SX is 'riba rash', and yup, the riba is the culprit.  TX also dries out the skin for almost everyone I've read about on Forum and it's important to stay hydrated, use humidifiers, skin lotions.

Ufortunately, itching on TX is quite normal.  If it's any consolation, mine was far worse the first 4 or 5 months then the past 10 months.  It's started flaring up again but I think that's more coz of the winter weather and the drying effects of heating systems.

Benadryl is good taken at night both for itching and sleeping.  Some people have recommended different products on forum but i found some of them made me break out even more.  I now use LOTS of plain old vaseline, right after showering, and that has helped.

Also, tell him NOT to take hot showers or baths as that can aggravate the skin.

I have started in  with the itching.  being t hat this  is  my second attempt of treatment  I was  prepared for this.  I found that taking 1 benadryl and using Eucerin's calming lotion was a tremendous help.

the itching was MUCH worse for me this time last year, between months 1 through 5.  I learned my lesson last winter and i now slather myself with skin lotion and/or vaseline before getting out of the shower, use hand lotion several times per day, hydrate, keep the humidifier going......

Benadryl or prescription antihistamines, as i take daily, helped as does warm, not HOT showers, chapstick, ocean saline spray . . . .

there were a couple of times the rash got so bad i had to get dermatologist prescribed ointments, like Mimmix but like i said, the rash is far more tolerable now than 12 months ago.
