Just diagnosed HYPO-thyroid post HEP C TX

Well, it's confirmed.  Last week, had a really, extremely high TSH.  They repeated the text and it had gone higher.  The odd thing is, all these years of treatmtents using Interfern and Riba and very combinations of different things with it, never had significant thyroid problems.  Now, 5 mon. post treatments and it went hypothyroid.  They also ran some kind of 'free' thyroxine level.  Anyhow, starting Synthroid in AM.  Maybe I'll get more energy and be able to think with a clearer brain?  Anybody else turn hypothyroid AFTER Hep C treatment, that can share if starting thyroid meds helped with brain fog and energy?  I see Hepatologist/(Gastro) Dr. next week and he's supposed to tell me what my Fibrospect test says.  Susan400

Thanks, everyone!!  I'll let you know after I've been on it a bit.  Don't think I should ever consider interferon again...., this last time with it has been the topper of the cumulative effect of years of on and off interferon and I think my body has finally screamed at me - Enough!  If absolutely necessary, I would consider Riba again, if doctor's thought it the best thing for me to do, but no more interferon...

Hi Susan, I'm so glad you finally got a dx for the crummy symptoms you were feeling! I wonder, though it's 5 mos since last EOT, if, in fact, it wasn't Tx cumulative & just reared it's head now. You've ingested a lot of powerful meds over time. It's sure sounds like your doctor(endo) is spot on. It's a sure sign when a Free T4direct( free thyroxine) is run, so many doctors just Dx w/ an elevated TSH, when a Free T4 is the most diagnostic weapon in their arsenal for a true Dx of Hypo T. The free thyroxine (T4) is not bound to proteins which a Total T4 & T3 bind to, and the high or low measure, (in your case low) Free T4 combined with a very elevated TSH is a definitive hypothyroidism. Again, not all doctors do this test, so I'm thankful you have a smart one! I speak from experience. I'm sure you're going to be feeling so much better & filled with more energy once again! Wishing you all the best in all tests & treatments!

I know its not what you wanted to hear but its good to know why you have been feeling so run down.  I have many friends and clients with Thyroid issues and they are well managed with the meds.  Initially you may have an adjustment period, but once you get the formula right you will begin to feel like a new person.
Am also hoping the fibrospect shows good numbers.  You have been thru so much with this virus and I am hoping for positive results.
Best Wishes
.....Kim

Mine happened during triple therapy.  I felt like I had been run over by a Mack truck!  I have never had thyroid problems in my life before.

Werent you recently sick?  I bet it was due to your thyroid.
