Lactulose

My Ammonia levels are 3 times to high. Anyone else used Lactulose & how does it effect you? Started 2 weeks ago and have to wear Depends & have explosions. I'm so sick of cleaning the carpet. When it starts, there is no way I can make it to the bathroom. Watery gold diarrhea. Mostly gold water, my poor butt hurts & the abdominal pains are eye opening.

Sound like you are taking too much!

You should have 3-4 "loose" bowel movements per day. Yes, it is common to have strange feelings and noises in your abdomen. You should get used to it after awhile. The point is "to keep things" moving. To prevent the toxins that the liver normally clears from reaching your brain. Doctors usual tell patients to titrate the dose of lactulose. Meaning vary it depending on your response so you have 3-4 bowel movements per day. You might notice that the amount of lactulose you need varies with what and the amount you eat each day.

Another suggestion. Do you take rifaximin? It has been shown to prevent future HE episodes. If you are not taking it you should talk to your hepatologist about it. Many of us with HE are taking both lactulose and rifaximin.

As in all cases tell your doc(s) about this.
