Liver biopsy results

Moderate steatosis with mild steatohepatitis
Grade 3 fibrosis

COMMENT:
Iron stain shows no increase in stainable iron. PAS stain shows no diastase
resistant globules in the cytoplasm. Trichrome stain highlights fibrosis
present. There is focal nodule formation although there is not frank cirrhosis.
There is Mallory hyaline present.

Can anyone explain how bad this is?  My doc says it is at stage 3 of stage 4, 4 meaning cirrohsis.
They also just did a new procedure today called a fibroscan and the nurse said it shows F1 or mild fibrosis.  I haven't talked to the doc on this one yet.

As far as how bad it is best to ask you doctor but for reference I was diagnosed with cirrhosis 7 years ago. You are not there yet so just follow your doctors recommendations and hopefully you will never be there.

This group is dedicated to patients with hep c do you have hep c as well as fatty liver?

Steatosis basically means "Fatty liver"
This may be reversible but you need the advice of your Dr to find out the underlying cause.
Stay well

To add to the information AWM has given you, you can take a look at this document regarding the comparison between needle biopsy and fibroscan (or elastography):

http://www.natap.org/2010/HCV/120510_01.htm

Albeit, it's rather technical. Your doc is the one to give you the professional diagnosis/prognosis/treatment options based on your condition.

Good luck. There's never been a better time to treat your HCV with excellent cure rates.

Hi there. This is a discussion board for hepatitis C which is different from steatohepatitis, which is NOT a virus.  Fibroscan is good at the early stages of fibrosis (scarring) or the late stages (cirrhosis). It is not so good at the middle stages.

Did your doc talk to you about your diet and exercise? Those are two important components to help control the progression of steatohepatitis. Also, alcohol is a big no-no for patients with fatty liver.

That is all I know except it may be part of metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes). Your doc should be advising you.
