Low Platelet count preventing treatment.

My Platelet count is at 39 and my doctor will not give me the treatment for Hep-C 1A.  Doctor says because I am productive and not sick, there is no need to take chances taking treatment.  I know that there is less that a %50 positive result for 1A but I would like to take treatment anyway.  Anyone else had this platelet problem? I think the cause is pressure on the spleen from damaged/swollen liver.  I believe my liver biopsy came back as no cirrosis (cirrhosis) but damn near it.

Viral load 650,000 (1.1 million a year ago)
AST 137 (131 a year ago)
ALT 247 (228 a year ago)

I feel good physically but don't just want to waste away when an effective treatment is a possibility. Any info on platelet counts with peg-interferon/ribavirin most appriciated.
