Low WBC, again

by Beannie Mae, Feb 02, 2002 12:00AM
I am very frustrated right now. Went to my gastro yesterday and after looking at my lab work he thinks it best I stop tx all together. I've had 3 half doses of PEG (not including the month of Nov when I had to stop for the same reason). I have been taking Neupogen since December (14 days straight, then every other day, then 2x week for the last 2 weeks). My WBC is .9, Absolute Neutrophils is 136 (26%). He is not comfortable increasing the PEG to full dose or continuing to use Neupogen daily for the entire course of tx.

I am 1a and had HCV for about 10 years, but I have a low viral load, no excess fibrosis, so we thought I stood a good chance to get rid of the virus. He said there are not long term studies showing the effects of using Neupogen as long as a year, plus how effective would the PEG be if I can only handle half doses?

My husband and I are very confused, not sure what to do now. Do we go to another doctor (saw a hematologist in Dec. but she was a ding-bat!) to see what is really happening in my blood? Do we just stop HCV tx, get my WBC (RBC are also low so I take Procrit) up to a safe level, and just sit back waiting for another new treatment? We've been waiting for PEG to become available so this is very frustrating!

Any suggestions or directions would be very appreciated!  jean
