Low platelets

I saw my liver Dr. today and he wasn't too concerned about my platelets level.(49) I have had low platelets for 3 years and haven't had any bleeding symtoms (symptoms) so far.(and have been as low as 20) I was afraid that he might want to cut my tx dosage but he wants to avoid that if we can. If they get lower than 25 to 30 we'll talk. He said that when you have low platelets your body makes more to keep up so what you have circulating is newer and bigger platelets and they funtion pretty well.(Don't go skydiving or anything) I was pretty relieved that he's doen't want to adjust my meds.        Hanging in there... -Libby

My platelets dropped to the low 50's when I started tx.
My doc treats me aggressively & doesn't worry unless it gets down to 30..even 25, like your doc.
Mine have bounced back a little, but only to around 60.
I'm on week 20/48.

Been wondering where you have been!! Sorry to hear about the platelets. Looks like you are not alone though as LadyE mentioned her Dr. said about the same thing. That has to be of some reassurance. How is the anemia? Are the rest of your CBC's ok? How is the blood sugar doing? Still keeping it under control with food? I want your doctor!  I had my dosage cut by half last week because of low platelets (34). My doctor wants me to have CBC's done for 2 weeks and see if the platelets come back up. In the meantime, I've been wondering why, if the problem is bleeding, I have a tiny pin ***** of blood whenever they stick that giant needle in my arm.  I kept thinking, my blood was obviously coagulating. You have answered my question.

What are bleeding symptoms? My platelets on tx have gone to 50, but they go back up quickly. They were low to begin with and hover around 120 now. It's great your dr. is up on this.

Orphaned Hawk, Remember...no sky diving with low platelets... No, really you do have to keep an eye on them. I hope yours come up soon.(or don't drop anymore)
Baygirl, there aren't really alot of noticable symptoms when your platelets get low. The bleeding that you have to watch for is extreme gum bleeding.(more than 5 minutes) And little spots , I think its called petique(i know that is spelled wrong) Nose bleeds that can't be stopped. I'm sure there's more...just be carefull.

Thanks for the info. After my report, I was worried about blood in the stools. Hard to tell...My platelets have been pretty good for a while now, but one reason my dr. was worried to begin with.
