o.k it looks like my other topic has been deleted.
just to clarify some misunderstandings.
the MRI was ordered by my family doc before I had the
ultrasound.so the MRI has nothing to do with the ultrasound as the us showed no lesions.
I wondered the same thing with regards to my husband. He has Cirrhosis, still has Hep C (failed triple tx), and has a strong family history of cancer and specifically liver cancer. His hepatologist decided that since his last CT scan in November showed no sign of cancer, that an ultrasound every six months would be fine.

thank you for your answer.
last week i had my last us(hcc screen) and i wonder now if i should get an mri every 6 months instead of us because ive seen some having mri done for hcc screen.
regards marc
It is safe. Myself and all patients with liver cancer have MRIs with contrast every 3 months at minimum. I have had liver cancer for about 2 years and had MRI with contrast every 6 months since 2007. So I figure I have has about 20 MRIs with contrast in the last 5-6 years. And even more often like when a have followup after cancer treatments.
Contrast agents are used to differentiate between the background of cirrhotic liver and other things such as lesions.
There no side effects. I have extensive liver disease as well as liver cancer. Eating food effects me more than contrast. Of course drink a lot of water to rid yourself of the contrast by urinating it out.
Contrast is only a problem if you are allergic to it or have kidney disease. The kidney is always tested using a creatinine blood test BEFORE a MRI is done.

Hey there, you are very welcome. I also was worried about this last year. I asked Hector and he also said it was safe.
They do ask if you are allergic to certain things but other than that I did fine. The anticipation was much worse than the actual test that was done. Afterwards I wondered what I was worried about.
Best wishes Marc

Hi Rexx, I had to have an MRI with contrast about 5 months after finishing tx. I am in cirrhosis. I contacted my liver doctor and he said it would be fine.
Like you, I was very worried about anything affecting my liver.
Good luck with your MRI
Let us know how you are doing
