Motrin, anti inflamatories and HCV?

Motrin, anti inflamatories and HCV?

Anyone out there know how safe or dangerous a drug like Motrin is for an athletic injury for people with HCV? If Motrin is bad, any other suggestions? As usual I can't get a straight answer from my HMO. Thanks. Travis

My liver doc said no Motrin or advil. Now sometime ago I read some doctors say it's ok, I guess you have to go with your Doc. Think they worry about bleeding and Motrin and Advil can cause bleeding in the stomach. I hope this helps. 45 more weeks to go and counting. The Can can!

Official disclaimer first: I am not a doctor (just in case the forum Natzis are watching ;-)

That being said, everything we put in our mouth, breath, and touch impacts the liver to some degree, either possitively or negatively.  Anti-inflamitories all have some degree of negative effect on the liver, unfortunately.  You'll have a hard time finding a doc that would say otherwise and he would be lying.  Taken in small doses with the docs knowledge is the usual reccomendation.  The only thing I know of that may help faster without bad sides would be accupuncture.  I sprained my ankle some years ago and accupuncture was a miracle.

BTW, Advil=Motrin=ibuprofen=Nuprin=Medipren.  All the same stuff.  Ibuprofen is the generic name.

It depends on how much damage has been done to your liver. If you have cirhosis then do not use Motrin. Tyleneol is ok. Not to exceed 2 pills every 4 hours. Or 6 per 24 hours.

Hello Maj!
Just in case you didn't get my reply earlier about my foot problems...

Thanks for the link!  http://www.foottalk.com/heelpain.htm
I've seen a few foot specialists and a pain specialist and they tend to agree with you somewhat because of the symptoms being so similar to Plantar Fasciitis, but having been diagnosed with Hep-C and High Blood Sugar after injuring both feet a year and a half ago, and spending six weeks in physical therapy to no avail, I'm pretty sure that my feet are unable heel up under my present health condition. One of my doctors noted the presence of sensations that are associated with neuropathy that can occur in Diabetes patients, although he was inclined not to make a final conclusion. I have also seen medical reports that revealed similar patient accounts of neuropathies associated with Hepatitis-C and other liver disorders.
Therefore, my road to physical recovery may parallel my Hepatitis recovery...hopefully.

                 HAPPY HOLLIDAYS EVERYONE!

In May I was in the ICU with liver failure, due to acetomenophen (tylenol) poisoning.  I had been given hycodan for cough, the day I stopped hycodan (was diagnosed with asthmas after some pulmonary function tests), I was givenvicodan for a pulled wisdom tooth.  I was taking sinutab daily for allergies as well.  When I started feeling sick I thought it was the flu and took some tylenol. Ended up in the ER, and was immediately put into ICU.  I wasn't told a whole lot, othr than my liver enzymes were at 999 and it was serious.  Had I been drinking it could have killed me.

That's how I met my liver doc, and he thinks I may also been having an attack of acute hepatitis c.

That brings me to two weeks ago, when we were discussing treatment with interferon/ribavan.  He said that the flu-like symptoms I'd get the first month would generally be treated with Tylenol.  I was really concerned, because of my experience in May. I read labels and stay away from anything containing acetomenophen, have developed a healthy fear of it.

However, he told me that yes, Tylenol (acetomnophen) is truly bad for the liver.  However, the treatments tend to thin the blood (along with anemia)and aspirin and ibuprofen both had anticoagulant properties.  He said that when looking at the overall picture, the tylenol would be safer for my liver, than the aspirin and ibuprofen would be when combined with interferon/ribavin.  He admitted it sounded odd to recommend Tylenol to a liver patient, but it was the lesser of the other evils.

I'm not sure if that helps, but it made sense to me.  Still, when they offered me tylenol yesterday for any discomfort from my biopsy, I refused it.  I just can't bring myself to take it after what happened this spring.

I guess I just wanted to emphasize, that Tylenol is the worst thing anyone can do for their liver...right up there with alcohol.  It is bad, bad, bad.  Ask your liver doc, he'll tell you.  My doc said it too, but explained that it was only used for sx with interferon/ribavan treatments due to the coagulation issue with aspirin and motrin, but he would never recommend it otherwise.

Please do not take tylenol if your liver is already sick.  Check with your liver doc first.

I must be half asleep, because in my previous post I forgot to mention:

I didn't want to leave the impression that I ended up in the ICU becuase some of the drugs were narcotic. It was not the hycodan, vicodin, sinutabs and tylenol per se that got me into the ICU.  It was because they all have incredibly huge amounts of acetomenophen in them.  Even the painkillers like hycodana nd vicodin can have 1000 mg or more of acetomenophen in them, but they don't tell you this. You have to read the patient info or ask your doc or pharmacist. For example, PercoCET, darvoCET as opposed to percodan and darvon, have acetomenophen, but they are more commonly prescribed than those without it. Most OTC drugs do too.  My pharmacist now has it in the compupter that they are to alert me if any prescription has it so they can call my doc for an alternative.
