by merlino, Feb 06, 2007 12:00AM
Hello Friends, been away for a while. Anemia came back and shot me down. Getting back on track. I am having a lot of problems with mouth sores. In and out. They are horrible and they hurt like $$$$. Any suggestions??

I have been looking for you EVERYWHERE. I knew it was the anemia or your computer blew up.  i am SO DAMNED GLAD YOU POSTED i CAN'T TELL YOU! I haven't been home all week until late or I would have called you to check on you. I couldn't take it anymore!

I have them as you know. I HATE them. Nothing really helped me with them When they got really BAD I actually had to put some peroxide on a qtip and clean them off to kill the infection. I mean I can understand how many germs we have in our mouths but they would hurt so BAD.

I tried every product on the market. I've brushed my whole mouth and used every mouth rinse there is.

My tongue now has gotten like cracks in it from being so dry for so long. They are even worse than the stupid tongue bumps.

I hope to God somebody knows something. I really thought you might have this problem because you have the same dry mouth problem that I haev and I am SURE that is what caused it.

I wish I could give you advice on this but I never conquered it. Still happening today. I hope to God it goes away soon.

I am SO TIRED of being SO THIRSTY you know?

How are you feeling other than that?

Did the doctor FINALLY get his S$#t together and prescribe the Procrit so you can take it on a weekly basis like you need to??????????????????????????????

Hey my friend!!I called you the past 2 nights. Figured you worked late. How do you feel? No more meds!!! I was just as sick with the anemia this time. I think thats why my sides have been so bad. Fevers and chills were almost every day. These mouth sores are killing me. Can't even eat. I will try to call you tomorrow night. So happy to hear from you!!!!

I have the sores that come and go. They are painful. I discovered in my case that tomatoes were setting it off. Not that this is your case. I rinsed with salt water and drank alot of cold ice water. hope this helps! :)shelly

I don't know if this will help but when I get canker sores I eat yogurt and they go away. It's the live acidopholus and lactobacillius that do the trick so be sure what you take has live cultures in it.

I managed to get rid of mouthsores with BETADINE mouthwash (green bottle black cap) Plz don't confuse with scrub or vaginal wash :-)..Itis got iodine in watered solution soft enough for the mouth and it seems to keep sores at bay. I also deliver it with a Waterpik with low pressure instead of dental floss to reduce sensitivty in gums. They bleed a bit, but no more canker sores... and then I go to the other major sx: GERD)

I tried the betadine mouth wash and it was so disgusting (I thought) I figured it HAD to work. Isn't the worst a medicine taste the better it is for you? ;)

Dr. Jacobson did tell me that these mouth sores are definitely from the Interferon - so it did make me think as long as we are on the med we will have them, cause we just keep putting it back into us.

I'm hoping they just go away now.

my daughter suffers w/ mouth sores and i get black walnut extract from the health food store. she applies it to the affected area at the earliest onset and she says it cuts the lifespan of the sores by more than half. she has had them two and three at a time. suggested same to a friend for herpatic sores and they swear by the stuff now.

I had awful mouth sores during and after treatment.  They initially got worse after tx along with my gums.  This is something to watch for after treatment - for a while it seems like our resistance is actually down for infections.  I got a lot of infections during the first six months after finishing.  I really had a hard time with my gums and my mouth with sores and irritations.  Eventually they cleared up but they were really a hassle.  I used prescription Periodex when things got really bad.  I discovered Desert Essence tea tree oil mouthwash and toothpaste and used that often - still using that - highly recommended.  Also had Biotene mouthwash on hand for the dry mouth - nice middle of the night gargle that helps with dryness.

If I had it to do over again, I would start to ramp up the oral care immediately after finishing tx and hold off on any teeth cleaning for a while.  I had this done a couple of months after finishing tx and it caused more problems than it solved.  One thing I noticed is that my whole system really needed time to get back on track - I really couldnt push the envelope at all or I paid the price - spicy foods, sauces, grease, etc.  Be careful on these things for a while.  Now I can basically eat anything I want - just tonight had some pepper sauce on brown rice - yum - couldnt do that kind of thing before treatment. LOL.

To: NYgirl;
Hi,Biotene and some other companies make a moisterizing gel that can be used before you go to sleep. If you use enough it will keep your mouth moist all night! I find it near the tooth paste at the drug store. The mouth wash didn't work as well for me.During the day chew gum.I never had sores in my mouth but I had them on my lips.only when I kept lip balm on them 24-7 did they go away. Even on maintenance I still get dry mouth but not as bad as regular tx. giddy
