NAUSEA, salt saved the morning

NAUSEA, salt saved the morning

Yesterday was ROUGH, as I struggled with Nausea ALL DAY.  Thought for sure I would have to ask for Zofran today.  Thankfully, that is not the case (at least not yet).  I decided to try something different.  My nurse had mentioned we could have our meds with ice cream.  So I started the morning with ice cream, took the RIBA, then about 30 minutes later, had some salty Kebbler (fake) cheese and crackers, then took the VIC (the VIC has been making me nauseous big time).  Wah Lah!!  NO nausea this morning!!!  I really think it was the salt.  Here is an article I stumbled across that gives nausea remedies.  Don't know if any of them works but it does mention that salty foods are at the top of the list:

http://www.tandurust.com/health-faq-4/prevent-vomiting-nausea.html

Hope it helps someone out there.  People mentioned they changed from sugar to salt during tx.  I took that to mean their tastebuds had changed, but now I think it meant that their systems handled the salt better than the sugar, during tx.

P.S......
I don't generally eat that way for breakfast but was scared to eat this morning.  So when I saw the crackers, I thought it was worth a shot.  I will figure out some salty alternative for tomorrow's breakfast.  Best to everyone!  Nausea is no joke.  It made me weak, incredibly slow (when walking), and loss of appetite.

Thanks everyone!  I have high blood pressure, so I will figure a way to balance the sodium on this.  Thanks for the idea: Pretzels, cheese curls, bacon, cheetos (hate fritos), eggs and cheese, chips.

Redsurfer -- thanks also for the info on Zofran.  I do want to try this with food first but am not opposed to taking it if the food doesn't do the trick.

I remember all those times my mother gave us saltiness when we were little and sick with a stomach bug.  Would guess you are right.  Good idea.  Thanks!

When I was thinking about tx and doing some research, I found this Forum, and heard about people eating ice cream with their last dose of the evening, and I thought, cool, I get to eat ice cream on a daily basis for medicinal purposes -- how great is that?  I think in 5 weeks I've only had it about 3-4 times because I'm craving salt...lol

And since I'm not much of a junk foodie, i.e., chips, cheetos, fritos, etc., I have gotten the same satisfaction from black olives, crackers, soups... I've had a couple of days with nausea, tho, and it's definitely not pleasant...

My rashes are back, unfortunately -- hopefully, they'll fade again in a day or so... :)

Take care...

For most patients with hepatitis C salt may be a solution for nausea.

The exception is cirrhotics. Patients with cirrhosis need to stay way as much as possible from anything with sodium in it. Keep sodium to less then 2000 mg per day to lower the risk of fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites) and legs (edema). It is usually not a good look especially on us guys when we have ascites and we look like we are having twins! Beside how ill and uncomfortable you will feel as you abdomen will have very little room for your stomach to eat and your lungs to breathe.

You can start reducing the sodium in your diet by:

Reading labels to see how much sodium foods contain and keeping careful track of your sodium intake. This is the surest way of evaluating your diet. You'll be surprised to see all the sodium  in 90% of canned "foods".
Limiting packaged foods and restaurant foods, which typically are very high in sodium.
Never add salt to your food during cooking or at the table.
Using low-sodium spices and sauces to add flavor to your food.

Cheers!
Hector

Hey Hector!  Glad to hear from you.  Thanks very much for adding this information.  I do not want to lead anyone to ascites (always wondered what that was) or edema.

As for reading labels for sodium content.....it amazes me how different one Brand can be to another.  Can't remember the food but one brand was say, 440 mg, while another brand was 1050 mg of sodium!!  So yes, I agree, know what you are putting into your body.  Even the so-called healthy stuff can be deceiving.

Vann --  Thanks Vann!  Hugs backatcha :)
Jasmine -- OMG you are so right.  Saltines were often the remedy.  I'm craving Ritz, for the salt AND the butter :)
Dreamcat -- Ouuu, I love black olives!  Thanks for the tip :)  Keep putting on Gold Bond Medicated Lotion in the green bottle, for the rash
Belle -- Thanks Belle!  There's a song that says....When the prayers go UP, the blessings come DOWN.  So thanks for the prayers :)
