Nausea

Hi my name is Deborah. I'm in my 13th week of treatment for hep c. I have  a lot of side effects. Nausea everyday...throwing up.
Does anyone have anything that helped them get through the treatment. I'm thinking of quitting even though it is working. Man after reading a lot of what you all wrote I feel like a whiney butt. I'm just tired of being sick everyday.
Thanks

I use Prilosec to coat my stomach and Phenegrin for the nausea. Mild foods, yogurt, ice cream, potatoes, rice, fruit etc.. Small amounts every few hours. I can no longer eat anything spicy or fatty. Talk to your doc you should not have to stop TX. I think it does come and go so hang in there.

Heck, the ginger didn't work for me. There are a few tips my doc gave that helped a bit – eat cold foods rather than warm, eat small meals. But nothing really made me feel less miserable.

But what I did want to say is that this will probably pass. The nausea is not supposed to be a side effect that lasts the duration. It lasts a certain period of time. So definitely hang in there. For a lot of people the side effects get milder as the treatment wears on. It won't always be like this. I know how hard it is. Hopefully a month or two from now it will be easier.

My heart goes out to you, Deborah. Throwing up would cause me to quit. I will take diarrhea over throwing up any day of the week.  That is probably the worst stomach related symptom I've had other than not being as hungry as usual. I don't usually eat much on the couple days after the Peg, but do a bit better during the work week.  I don't think you're a whiney butt at all. Believe me, if I had your sides, I'd be whining my A$$ off.  I have heard people say try Ginger ale. Ginger in general is supposed to be soothing to the stomach.  I pretty much will eat anything that is appetizing even if it's less than optimum in nutritional value.  Ice cream and sherbet work for me.  I've heard others say to take advantage of it if you ever are hungry and eat as much as you can and calorie dense stuff is not a no no at this time.

Hi Deborah,

Hang in there; you’ll eventually prevail. You will probably want to contact your doctor; he or she can prescribe an antiemetic to help with the nausea and vomiting. For the meantime, try ginger; some people find it works better than some of the Rx meds. Try fresh ginger brewed into tea, or sometimes you can find candy ginger, or even ginger ale.

Good luck; you’re certainly not alone in this,

Bill
