I had a very bad reaction to Neumega from just one dose. it has lasted for over 3 weeks now. It does get a little better each week. Has anyone seen this or know how this might last?
Yes, I have cirrhosis. I didn't find out I had Hep C until I had ascities. I thought up until then, the changes I was experiencing were all from menopause. I actually didn't feel bad at all! Anyway, my hemoglobin is normal. WBC are really low. My last shot (Thurs) was a half dose and I do feel a lot better. Right before that my bones started aching. I'm small and a lightweight with medicines so I am hoping the smaller dosage will work better for my body. I do hope I don't need to use neumega but I want to know about all my options.
Thanks for the explanation about manual counting. It makes sense.
I am trying, I don't know what else to do.
Thanks for your words of support. It does help.
The manual reading is just that. Someone actually does a physical count. But, you started real low and I'm betting the count is accurate. Wow, 34 is very low. Some others who treated had their platelets go into the 30's but I think it was later in tx. If your hgb is still hanging up there, maybe you will have better luck with Neumega than I did. Someone else here awhile back was on Neumega for quite awhile. I know he had some problems with it but I believe they resolved after he finished tx.
I wish I could help you more. My magic wand isn't working, :-(. (That's a sad face)
Do you know why your platelets started out so low? Are you chirrotic? Well, let's hope your platelets bounce back up and you're back up to full dose next week. I'll be thinking of you so let us know how it works for you. I often check the lower threads so if nothing else, post here. I really want to know and wish you the best. I was half dosed early in tx for WBC and HGB so I know how you're feeling.
Either way, you're doing your best. Remember that. Hang in there.

camomile tea huh? yeah I say guzzle it definitely. Can't hurt. I'll be guzzling some tomorrow :) My low platelets happened first time I treated. I was pulled on account of it. Since I'm getting ready for treatment again (hopefully) and since they're 132 now, I'm interested in what drugs might help if they get too low. I want DRUGS this time.
Best of luck.
I think alfalfa sprouts also help build platelates by increasing Vit K. You may want to sprout your own because of possible e coli in commercial products. it will take about 3 or 4 days.nothing is ever simple any omer. Also Vit C may help. Ask you doc about pharmasutical vit K pills. (don't know what they are called) An integrative medicine doc gave a friend of mine those pills. Don't know if it would be OK with treatment, though. Glad you are feeling better. Hope you are staying warm during these cold days. Ocean
I've got a cold frame full of greens if they don't all freeze tonight. But I've made sprouts before, no biggie. I do see an herbalist sometimes. Say hello to the whales for me.
I am on week 6 of 24. My platelets pre-tx were 98 and now are 34. My doc cut my dosage by half hoping the platelets will come back up during the next couple of weeks. If not, he wants to pull me. My wbc are really low too.
Now I am confused ( nothing new). I had a hard enough time getting this lab result. I have no idea what the manual reading is. I certainly will ask when I get my CBC this week.
What are your platelets now? I was on Neumega about week 42. You can probably do a search in the archives and find out what I posted. I had a very bad experience with it in that my hgb went from the mid 9's down to 7.4. I nearly was unable to finish because of that. I only did two injections.
Worse part was, in the end, I didn't need it! When you get your CBC results, are they confirmed with a manual reading? Ask for that to be sure it is correct. My preliminary said 41 when the manual was up in the 60's or something.
There is one other individual I know of who was on regular Neumega and he had some serious problems I can't go into.
What are your platelets and what week are you on?
miss
The camomile isn't a scientific thing, but this woman swears it brought up her platelets and wbc. I gotta drink lots of fluid anyway so why not tea?
I thought you might be interested in seeing a copy of the reply I got from M.K. Andrews concerning platelets:
There is only one drug I know of that can bring your platelets back. It's called Neumega (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals). Like procrit and neupogen, Neumega appears to be FDA approved for low platelets resulting from chemotherapy. Unfortunately, IFN therapy is not considered chemotherapy, so there is always a possibility your insurance might not cover it - but it's always worth a try. Like chemotherapy, IFN is a myelosuppressive, which means a generalized suppression of bone marrow, but not all hepC docs are familiar with these drugs. Also there is some evidence that procrit (which is easier to get) will also help bring platelets back, so if you're anemic, this is another alternative. Let me know how it turns out.
you will have to type neumega in search box at wyeth site (at top of site in left corner). it'll give you various links -- drug info link will be included.
Hi Orphaned hawk. I hope you're hanging in there.
Here is WYETH's site (NEUMEGA INFO). Just copy and paste the tinyurl link into your browser -(the url is too long to put here) and it should pull the site up.

Hope these help some. There are many more links on Neumega. If you google "Neumega low platelets Hep C" (or just Neumega) you should find some good reading.
Best of luck.
Thanks, I'll check it out. I want to be prepared for my doc in case my platelets don't come down. He is pretty open to giving out prescriptions.
I'm actually feeling better with my half dose yesterday. I felt so miserable the last week. Somebody mentioned camomile tea as being good for platelets, so I'm guzzling the stuff! Why not?
