I agree, Then maybe if they find the suspected multiple thousands that have HCV then we can get more doctors to treat HCV. I am having such a hard time finding anyone who is not 4 hours away that will treat me. All are refering people to Pittsburg, PA or Rochester, NY And while Rochester is a little closer, my INS. won't cover me going in to NY to treat. No-one in even Erie treats.... it doesn't make sense that so many people supposedly have hcv but no-one will treat it....
I'm so sorry you are having so much trouble finding a doctor to treat you close to home that your insurance will cover. We are already battling a very potent virus we don't need all these other battles too. We need our energy to fight Hep. C.
You are right about the issue of insurance. While it would be good for people to discover they have HCV (in order to treat it), the diagnosis would qualify as "a pre-existing condition" which would make them ineligible to receive medical insurance.
I agree, we need to test everyone for HCV and HIV. It seems it would save money to check people early to prevent the virus from spreading to others. Spreading it should be an incentive for ins. co to want to test everyone, to prevent further infections. This is most likely why they want to do the HIV testing on everyone.
Amazingly enough, I always just ASSUMED that they automatically tested for aids ... & when I got diagnosed with HCV I again just assumed that they also tested for HIV... much to my surprise... They Don't...
So I actually had my Doc order the test ... he kind of didn't want to & assured me that there would be other tell tale signs, but I insisted...
Thank Gawd It was Negative... but I can't tell you what a relief it is Just KNOWING... I am still surprised that it is NOT automatically tested for.. Go Figure!
:)
Tommorrow is shot day and I have been taking my shot in the late evening. If I take my shot about six hours earlier than my normal time will that matter. I was told to stay consitent on my med dosing. Thanks and best wishes to all
Switching the time earlier, won't make the slightest bit of difference. You never want to prolong shots, though. Thats where the meds lose serum levels, etc. Alot of people have bumped up their days, say from friday to Thursday's, cause they seem to get hit with most sx's 2-3 days post.
Shouldn't be a problem, but of course run it by your Doc or PA..
It is so shocking but when someone REQUESTS that they ALSO do an HCV test it seems the common answer is NO!
Now, in general most people seem to have a REASON to ask that they be given it anyway - if you possibly have a source of contagion...no matter what it is - how can they say NO!
I was told NO too.
I told my doc well my exhusband has it. She said no it's not very common for anyone to get it that way it's not necessary. I said but I had children with him and worry about them too! I was told No! I had to SAY I had done IV drugs in order to get the test. It went back and forth for quite a while before that. I mean I was insisting I get it and she kept saying NO!
So....seeing that I am stage 3 - I'm awfully glad I kept to my guns and was willing to say/do whatever was necessary.
That is why I think it's gonna be a long long long way away before they help us beat this disease for good. The logic must be "if they don't know don't tell them the dirtbag drug addicts" because honestly I can't see any of the logic.
Maybe not mandatory but when REQUESTED????!!!!!
I moved my shot from 9PM to 12 noon, since my sides hit the next day. I have heard you can move your shot UP 12 hours per week to get to the desired day you want (If moving days). Moving it up six hours should be fine.
How are you doing. I thought I read somewhere that you had a bad PCR. Is this true? I haven't seen it anywhere else. I hope all is well.
Doesn't it seem like EVERYTHING is called pre-existing these days? It drives me CRAZY!
Painter - have you asked the INSURANCE company to find you a GI who can manage your care? I mean then how could they complain? Isn't there a local hospital in the area = all hospitals have to have some sort of person for infectious disease or serious GI issues right?
I just can't believe there is nobody in PA closer!!! At least if you have to drive the 4 hours...it's only once in a blue moon I mean honestly I don't hardly EVER see the doctor at all. As long as you could do bloodwork nearby - you might be able to swing it.
Insurance - thank God for it but man oh man what a total pain!
Everything is going well as can be. Und. at 12 weeks . taking shot 20 of 48 mannanna. Hope everthing is going well with you
I can not agree more. With me when I donated blood after the Northridge earthquake; I received a letter from the health dept. stating I had HCV; but assured me it was not AIDS. I also, was asked by my OBGYN at the beginning of each pregnancy if I wanted to test for AIDs, and I did for both pregnancies. I have been tested 3 times and no new partners for 20 years.
This is the only reason I know. But, you do have to consent to do the test when you are pregnant too. If you have a doctor concerned enough he will offer you these test at pregancy.
I think more people should have the option to test than is allowed today.
Defeat the diseases before they do so much damage, I am sure, or my common sense tells me there will be less costly in the long run. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out if you can stop the spread; eventually you can maybe not fully defeat; but control the disease.
GOOD SUBJECT!!!!

Great post, NYgirl! Thanks. I couldn't agree with you more about more HCV testing. There are approximately 4 million people in the US with HCV, right? Does anyone know the percentage of people who know they have HCV versus the percentage that don't know they have it? Does an estimated stat exist for this in the US and in the world? Does anyone know where I might be able to find one? Thanks again for the great post, NYgirl. Aiuta
I was tested with my 2 younger kids when iwas pregnant for hiv, thank God that was clear I just assumed they tested for all other virus to , I was so shocked when i found out i had hcv after a routine blood exam, because i was for certain id been tested for everything and was free and clear...
I asked the hep nurse why dont they test the pregnant women for hcv and she said because transmission chances are small...
Well hi there new yacker, hope you been ok. Just needed a rest.
You said above.........I put mine all into a little binder so I can see what has gone up and down and sideways over the many months..............
Hmmmmm, wouldn't a mirror work better? You could see better. And i don't know about that sideways bit, could tip the boat.
When I had Insurance through my many employers for over 30 years I never went to the doctor...(I was my own pharmacist LOL)
After making a life change and then finding myself with no health insurance because of a crappy job--that was when I started feeling fatigued from the HCV.
I knew something was wrong with me and curious/scared to find out. I could've gone to a "sliding scale" clinic for $25, but knew about the pre=existing thing, and just in case it was really bad I wanted to CYA (I mean mine)
So I went on line and got a personal BC/BS policy for $250/mo. Couldn't really afford it, but figured I would just drop it after getting a clean bill of health. So then I went to the doc and got a "well woman exam" which includes all the diagnostic stuff blood panel, and got the DX for HCV. Was never so HAPPY to have that INS.
I feel so sorry for the many people who post saying that they have no ins.--not to mention the people who get "bent over" by losing their job and not knowing about or being able to afford the cobra.
I wish "the rules" were common place knowledge. If you are sick and think it could be serious...Don't get that DX unless you get the ins first.
I wonder how many indigent people go to those sliding scale places for something simple and wind up getting a blood test and then everything goes horrible wrong...
Cando, Good To See You (as Always) Hope this finds you are doing better!
Rev, I always ASSUMED That They Where... I hear tell that testing for blood capatibility is no longer manditory either (Dunno, I haven't walked down the isle in the last 20 years)...
Sure seems like there are some prime opportunities for folks to get tested on this stuff!
:)
