Opthamalogist ?

Hi everyone! I just made an appt with an opthamalogist to get a "baseline" on my eyesight.  Are there any specific questions I need to ask him?  And how often should I see him during tx.  I have noticed on this forum some individuals are having eyesight problems so I am trying to get ahead of the game.  Any insight (no pun intended) would be appreciated.

Have a great day Jules

I saw my hep doc yesterday , looked over my labs said a fibroscan will be done in July says I am f0-f1 from what he sees , no cirrossis all results are good my last fibroscan in October did not work problem with equipment so he does not see the need to rush into tx at the moment and a second specialist with him did a calculation on blood lab and said the same thing .He is monitoring me for now  and still going for opthamologist test my lung and ekg is normal, rbc very good, platelets very good, everything is good . If fibroscan matches his calculations we discuss tx if not on to liver biopsy. My hep doc and 2nd liver specialist sees only mild fibrossis . That is my status so far.The fibroscan hopefully wiil show the same .

Hi Candyce,

You mentioned above, “And dry eye syndrome Soren's or something”.

This is probably Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune issues that can involve more than just dry eyes. You want to be sure to mention this to your treatment doctor; I’m not sure how interferon works into this. Be sure to read through this link:

This is one of the side effects.Save your money until after the program.Your eye vision will probably return to normal

Save your money?? Do you think that is sound advice to someone starting tx ?..

..Patients should be examined before starting therapy to look for pre-existing retinopathy.  If any is present, interferon should not be used or the patient should be monitored closely-for example monthly.  If  no retinopathy is present, less frequent examinations might be performed, such as at 3 months, unless the patient notes decreased vision.

My heppo gave me orders for a retina exam prior to treatment.  I made an appointment with an opthamologsit and they said I needed a retina specialist and gave me another name.  The retina specialist did a baseline exam and even an optical angiogram because he saw some things in the back of my eye..  Those turned out to be no big deal.  He wrote a letter saying I could do the interferon treatment and schuled 2 appts during treatment.  I am glad to have this additional comfort level.

What they look for are cotton wool spots and the beginnings of any retinal hemoraging.

Hi Jasmine...I hope I don't run into the same problems as you did!  I was able to get into a large eye center who are all Opthamalogists.  I explained to receptionist I had Hep C and needed the baseline done.  I was able to get in on the 18th of this month.  So I feel pretty fortunate getting in so quick.  I will let you know my experience.

Have a great day!

By the way, when I went to an opthomologist the first time, I just found one close.  It took them two months and multiple appointments to finish the baseline.  It was ridiculous.  I got the impression that the office and the doc were more about normal eyeglass work and would not be able to actually handle it if I had a problem.

When I had a problem, I did more research and found one with good reviews that seemed to focus on more severe issues.  They redid the entire set of tests used for the baseline  that took me months and the other doc, in one hour, without any advance warning it might be needed.

I was told to go back in 6 months.  I ended up going back earlier because I had some blood in my eye.  Turned out to be ok.

Dry eyes are very common on tx.  More severe problems can occur so rubbing dry eyes is likely bad.  Get some drops and use them from the start.  Over the counter is probably fine but you might ask what they suggest.

I just use genteel medium to moderate, night and morning, carry some with me during the day because I do need it now and then.

My hep doc scheduled me for an appointment 19-01-12 , I saw my doc todsy and scheduled me for fibroscan in July to see liver damage he suspects based on my last blood labs F1-f2  fibrossis he confirmed no cirrossis and fibroscan should confirm same . I am feeling good about that.

Hi Pooh thanks for the info.  Ya know I have had dry eyes probably for the last two years and I just thought it was getting older and I live on top of a mountain so I get quite a bit of wind up here.  But I never went back to the eye Dr.  (As you can tell I am a procrastinator when it comes to Drs)! lol...I will mention this also to him.

and to candyce1953

I was having a dry eye/irritated eye problem last summer before I started treatment. After trying Systane with only partial relief, my eye doctor started me on Lotomax eye drops (Lotomax for a month) and Restasis eye drops for the duration of treatment.  So I am on Restasis twice a day (am and pm) for the full 48 weeks of treatment. He was concerned that since I already had dry, itchy, irritable eyes (felt like something in them all of the time) that I might develop corneal abrasions or ulcerations, something one really does not want on triple treatment. Now that it is winter I am also using Systane eye drops in between the Restasis drops. (Restasis in am, Systane in the afternoon, Restasis again at bedtime. I have had no further problems with the dry itchy eyes.

When I went to my opthamologist I told him I was starting triple med treatment and that I needed a thorough baseline eye exam. He knew exactly what I needed and he knew the side effects of the meds. He did a thorough eaxam, including a retinal scan. I had a return appointment for two months after I started treatment and he did another retinal scan as well as an exam. My next appointment with him will be 6 months after that two month appointment. Of course, if I notice any problems I will see him on an emergency basis prior to that 6 month exam.

I would just be sure he does a really thorough exam, including a retinal scan. I would also ask him if he can get me in to see him on an emergency basis if I do notice problems while on treatment. I can get in the same day I call if I notice problems. I have noticed some others on the forum seem not to be able to get in on an emergency basis and I think being able to be seen the same day one calls (if need be) is crucial. One cannot wait a week or even a few days if one's retina is detaching or other problems are appearing.
