PBC or Autoimmune Hepatitis

I discoverd I had elevated AST and ALT enzymes five years ago.  I had all the liver disease tests done then.  They were all negative and normal.  My doctor recommended checking them periodically.  They have gone up and down, but have not significantly increased (the highest being AST 80, ALT 180).  My doctor used the wait and see approach.

I moved a year ago and went to gastroenterologist and had all the tests redone and they all came out normal and negative.  She recommended a liver biopsy a month ago.  It came back as stage 1 and stage 2 active chronic hepatitis but with no diagnosis.  My doctor repeated the blood work again - everything again returned normal and negative.  I have no other symptoms or abnormal blood tests besides the AST and ALT.

She thinks it is either PBC or autoimmune hepatitis.  I have scheduled a second opinion with a liver specialist at our University Medical Center but can't get in until mid December.  My gastroenterologist wants to start me on Imuran and prednisone immediately.  From what I've read, these meds have no effect on PBC and have a different drug therapy.  All the indicators for PBC and AIH have been normal or negative.  I desperately want a second opinion before I start on the meds because I am not convinced she knows what it is.  Should I wait for my second opinion or take the medication?

I am hoping that you were tested for all the hepatitis viruses and were negative? if not you should ask for it.
as far as the other question, you should know that there are no physicians in this forum to answer medical questions, only patients or persons related to them. if you have not gotten good enough answers, I would keep looking for an MD that will.

I am a PBC and autoimmune cholangitis patient (also stage I - II). most of what I know about these diseases, I learned around the web in general, and from   the Q & A's archive (the one with the doctor) here on medhelp.
you don't mention your antibodies (AMA, ASMA, etc). did you test them ? as I understand it, they provide a kind of a "signature" that helps identifying your disease, although not at the 100%. but the antibodies AND biopsy results TOGETHER should provide a sure diagnosis. didn't anybody recommend also Ursodiol for you ? it is a standard therapy for PBC, I think (an practically without side-effects).I've been treated with it alone for six years, but now the specialists chose to add prednisone and aziaprine (imuran).
I started them two months ago, but before that it took me two more months to decide, between the doc's prescription and me taking the first pills. I understand your uncertainty and your anxiety. I also was pretty upset at first. you may want to take a little time to think, it shouldn't mean much if you wait till december  - PBC is usually a slow disease, and imuran and prednisone's effects are generally checked on a middle -long term (in my case about one year, I've been told).
this is just my opinion and experience as a patient. you may also want to post  a question for the doctor, here on medhelp, if you like to know more: I got a very good impression of it.
all the best to you - please let me know when you have some news.
