PLEASE HELP!!!!

by nmilk, Jan 17, 2002 12:00AM
Three weeks ago I donated blood and yesterday received a letter stating that they couldn't use my blood because of elevated ALT levels. This is the first time I have tried to donate in ten years, when I gave every 56 days. The reason I stopped donating back then was also elevated ALT levels. My reading 3 weeks ago was 147. My cousin who is a nurse looked at the other readings and said I tested negative for Hep A, B, and C. It was suggested in this letter that strenuous exercise can elevate ALT levels, and I am a powerlifter and workout 6 days a week. My maternal grandfather died of liver cancer, and my mother has Alpha 1 anatrypsin (sic) enzyme deficiency. I don't drink or regularly take medication. I weigh 220 lbs. at 5'10," but am not obese, as I have lifted weights for 15 years. All other readings on the letter are normal: Blood Pressure 120/70, Cholesterol 153, pulse 60, etc. The only supplement I take is a liquid vitamin and mineral supplement. No extra protein or anything else, just what is in the foods I eat, which are in moderate portions several times a day. Should I worry about the 147 reading?
