The House Committee on Government Reform conducted an important oversight hearing on "Stalking a Furtive Killer: A Review of the Federal Government's Efforts to Combat Hepatitis C."   The hearing [broadcast Tuesday on CSPAN] assessed the federal government's very limited progress since 1998 in responding to the hepatitis C epidemic....

The Hepatitis C Epidemic Control and Prevention Act was introduced in 2003 by Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA). The bill mandates a federal hepatitis C control and prevention program, and would provide the necessary funding for much-needed hepatitis C counseling, testing, surveillance, education, training, and research. The legislation has not yet been voted upon by Congress. Advocates hope Tuesday's hearing will lead to reintroduction and passage of the bill.
