Paying for a trial????????????

Ok my  friend has applied for several trials.One Dr just called him and said there was a one time fee of $225.00.I thought trials were  basicall all free??He hasnt even had bloodwork or biopsy yet and hasnt even been accepted!!!!What the heck?????
  He is being screened for the tela trial and this is another trial and no money has been mentioned.Anybody heard of this......cindy

Are ou sure it a legitimate drug trial and not just a marketing ploy?  Do you have the trial identifier? What condition is the trial for, HCV?

It was a trial with TMC435 and was with Dr Gitlins office in Atlanta.He applied over the internet and was called by Dr.Gitlins office afew days later.He is a hepatologist here in Atlanta area,and several people here have treated with him...I just never heard of this cindy

He has since screening for the tela trial with Dr.Pearlmans office(Tela 2 x daily or 3 x daily)NO PLACEBO-you get the real thing.

  Glad you are ok with the weather C. No I have not heard of being charged, however, 225 bucks might be being charged towards labs and bx??? I dont know just  a thought. Oh and when I got into a trial my geno, bx, and labs were like 30 to 60 days new... Good luck to our friend or is it the other person w de 3 pup's you are refering to?

Your friend can always contact the pharmaceutical company that's sponsoring the trial.  Based on FlGuy's info and checking on clinicaltrials.gov - it's Tibotec Pharmaceuticals in Ireland.

My husband was in the Phase II trial for TMC435 and was never charged anything. In fact they payed him reimbursement for travel expenses. I wonder if it's particular to that doctor?

He practices at Emory where I go but I'm at the Infectious Disease Clinic.  Is the trial being conducted out of Emory or his private practice?  He is also associated with Piedmont which is not a research/teaching hospital so I doubt it is through there.  I guess my point is that Emory clinical trials are free and pay for travel expenses so it seems odd.  Dr. Gitlin does seem to be highly regarded in liver disease treatment.

I should add if it's a one-time fee and you get the triple therapy it's still a bargain!

That does not sound right to me at all.  I've been in 2 trials in the past 6 years and neither one of them charged me a penny and in fact, one of the trials even paid me.  I don't think I would pay them anything, in my opinion!  Susan400

Hes scheduled for a biopsy on May 4 for the tela trial with Dr Pearlman.This trial has not asked for money and told him they will pay him.Its the sure thing with the tela.
Now in that TMC435 trial  something doesnt sound right...in fact they made him fill out paperwork asking about income!!!If  your in a trial income shouldnt have anything to do with anything!!!
  Im gonna look further into the $225.00 deal.Ya it would be a good deal but thats alot of money they would be taking from people that maybe they shouldnt be????? cindy

I don't see why a research facility would need to charge when the drug company pays the research facility significant money to hold the trial.  Perhaps it's a special case but it seems very odd.

doesn't sound right to me either, they should actually pay you for your time, they often times put you up if you come in from out of town etc.

Again, my husband was in a Tibotec trial for TMC435 and did not fill out any paperwork regarding income. I would ask them if it's their own protocol. I doubt it has anything to do with Tibotec or the trial protocol.
