Post and Weight

My girlfriend and I were just talking about this yesterday - as we all know major weight loss during treamtent is really common.  Then after treatment it seems to sneak back up and go over where you started from.     :(

Do you think there is any chance that the reason our cholesterol goes so high can have something to do with this or is it just because our livers weren't working right before so it really couldn't get high?

Like if we could lose the extra post treatment gain - do you think the cholesterol would go down? Does anybody know? I'm trying not and it's hard but...not much choice the doctor insists it's too high.

Total CHolesterol 257
LDL 121
HDL 96     ( Awesome negative predictor too just like you!)
Tri 199 (There you go there is my bad bad bad thing)

I think my total cholesterol is lower because my "good cholesterol" is so high it helped me.......but triglycerides of 199.....

I always had perfect cholesterol so it's sickening - he gave me six months to do something about it before I start the meds so I HAVE to I am NOT taking more meds just cause I gainned a few pounds. Now I"ve lost about 8 of the 15 I wanted to lose so 7 more or so and we'll see what happens to the cholesterol. I'm 5'7 so at 145 I was too heavy (ouch) but at least now I'm getting more manageable at 137 if I can lose 5 more even at 5'7 132 is fine for me and would give me a BMI from 22.7 down to 20.7 (current 21.5).  doctor said that most people are comfortable about 20 and that is where I should aim..........but it ain't easy damn.

I think he's just skinny and thinks all people should be too!

Hey Denise my folic acid is low too!!!!!!!!!  It seems we have the same pattern!

This *****!

It is crazy that this thread came up because I am dealing with the same thing.

For some reason I gained a lot of weight before I was even diagnosed, I went up to 150 lbs which was way too heavy for me.  I usually weigh about 120 lbs.  Before I was diagnosed I lost the xtra 30 lbs without trying, it was really noticable and people were asking me about it.

On Tx I lost about 5 more lbs.  Now i am at 130 lbs (10 lbs more than I want) with high LDL cholesterol,

LDL cholesterol = 190
VLDL cholesterol Cal = 15 (I don't even know what this is yet)
Folic acid was low too
And for some reason hemoglobin (16.1) and hematocrit (46.3) were both slightly high.
These levels were on Sept 4 th.

I have lab slips coming to recheck it, hopefully it is lower.  I was on a seafood kick for a while, lobster, crablegs, & shrimp.  Hubby hates seafood and he was away at trade shows so I indulged.

Blood pressure was slightly high on Tx and for a while post TX but now with the help of metoprlol it is normal.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it LOL

Just an idea.
IFN alpha tx increases IFN gamma. IFN gamma plays a role in the destruction of pancreatic cells. Imbalance in the pancreas leads to insulin resistance (and a ravenous appetite).

I have treated twice and both times lost some weight on tx - not much the second round. Each time, I returned to my normal weight and have maintained that. But I kept up a daily weight training regime during treatment and started cardio workouts and yoga as son as I could after tx - I think working out helped my mentally during tx and made my recoveries quicker as well.

I have struggled with high cholesterol due to my HIV meds. A previous doctor suggested a high dose of fish oil plus non-flushing niacin and after a couple of months, my cholesterol and tryglicerides dramatically lowered to the normal range. But be careful on tx with fish oil as it can thin the blood - always check with your MD to make sure there wouldn't be any adverse effects. A healthy diet (lots of fiber, protein, healthy fats and low sugar) and regular exercise routine are really important in controlling cholesterol levels. It takes work at first but it pays off long-term. But it is much easier than being on tx!

Thanks for popsting that link, I knew I had read something about this before.  I too had a massive rise in my LDL levels which pushed my total cholestrol into the "danger" zone.  Prior to tx and SVR I had low cholestrol, something I used to congratulate myself on!  I am due for another cholestrol test soon so will be interested to see what changes have come about.  I haven't actually tried very hard to alter my eating habits but I am consuming significantly less fat since stopping tx as I had upped my fat intake to help with riba absorption.

The wieght gain issue is a mystery to me.  On my first tx I gained about 10kgs and then some more after I stopped.  On this tx I lost about 7 kgs, when I stopped I tx I put about 5 kgs back on, and if my scales are to be believed this morning I appear to have lost all that again.  I can't keep up with the rollercoaster!

I do think my latest loss could be due to the fact that I am now way more active than I was during and even before tx but I still do all the wrong things like eat chocolate and have dinner and carbs after 8pm.

Like many things to do with tx there are a multitude of of answered questions!

I don't have a cholesterol issue, but, thanks to warnings I read on this forum, I am determined to keep the tx weight loss off and to continue losing weight before I treat again. I've found an on-line tool that has helped tremendously to help control my food intake.  It's my food diary *******. If the foods you're eating are contributing to your problem this may help.

Glad to see others out there like me gained weight on tx.  That was also the first time I ever craved sugar.  Y'all might remember when I was trying to convince hubby that watermellon licorice was a great choice for dinner.

All the ice cream and fatty food caught up with me and my triglycerides got high.  Post tx, trying to eat my normal healty diet and excercise more, they have come back into the normal range.

Flax seed and fish oil seem like a really good idea to add.

I gotta tell you Flax seeds and fish oil are the way to go.  Add the fish oil capsules with meals and try ground flax seed which is absorbed better.  It lowered my mother in laws cholesterol alone. It isn't bad at all.  You sprinkle it or add it to things.  It just kinda adds a crunch.
Also, i think the reason I ve put on weight is before the treatment i went out of my way to eat well, made salads, cut up veggies...cooked. Now i just eat what ever.  I 've way compromised and when you are feel yucky, lets face it, simple carbs are it.  Crackers, toast, etc. Added carbs and reducing exercise is not a good combo--ever.

See me too it just sneaked right on there and now it's almost impossible to fight it off (lesson to all you tx'ers don't eat everything when you are done cause bam!) But me too I never was into sugary things and deserts EVER and then I could have just about eaten it by the spoonfuls - food never tasted as great!!!!!

But now I gotta get this cholesterol down - its starting to really make me mad cause face it it was one of the few perfect things I ever had physically before!!!!!!

I'm trying but it's not so easy - it's not like being 20 anymore :(

And yay Vic nice to see you posting.  The more people that post the more fun the forum is!!!

I might try brewers yeast - I'm that desperate I don't want him to talk to me about it next time I just want it to go DOWN....................

Good Vic.. ;-/ and don't worry about the brain fog and typos on the forum. Here people understand.

Yes, yes.... the weight gain after tx. It creeps up on you. For me it was because food had never tasted so good. The first 3 months post tx I stuffed myself with all kinds of food. Everything was soooo delicious. Stuff I didn't eat before starting tx. Like marshmallows, cream, candies, cakes, commercial chocolate... I developed a sweet tooth.

Before starting tx I didn't even have sugar in anything.

I tried to fatten myself up a little before starting tx, in order not too get too thin during tx, but nevertheless I dropped down to 52kg, not good. My BMI was 19 by the end of tx, kind of scary.

Within 3 months I put on 10 kg, that's a lot for me. Now the BMI is 23,1.
I'm not complaining, but it really sneaked up on me and I ended up weighing 6 kgs more than my usual weight.

About 3 years before I started tx my cholesterol was getting a little high and my weight and blood sugar.  So I made a lifestyle change and dropped 40 lbs.  My blood work dropped dramatically in the 1st 6 months.  It was radical.  My triglycerides went down 94 points!
After feeling confident in my routine and healthier I ventured into treatment. 7 months later I've gained 8-10 pounds.  I think it is from the lack of exercise. Figures I would gain weigh sigh..... My regular M.D. just added  a Cholesterol check to go along with the rest of my routine liver labs during treatment. I Haven't checked them since that 3 years ago one I mentioned earlier.
It would have been nice to lose weight during treatment but I rather lose the virus.
BTW, I am posting on someone else's thread....;)
