Protein Supplements while on tx

Protein Supplements while on tx

The nurse at Shering told me to take a protein supplement while on treatment. I went to GNC and got the powder that one scoop is 20 grams of protein.

Remember the Adkins Diet ? Well if I recall, that's a high-protein diet that actually killed some people because it's so hard on your liver.

Question(s):

If my liver is messed up, why should I be taking protein supp ?
Is anyone else doing this ?

Do you have cirrhosis? and at that, advanced cirrhosis? that's when you have to make specific protein decisions with your doctor... I mean "a lot" of protein might be hard on people with liver considerations, so there are all kinds of variables youre talking about, so how much are you talking about?...they maybe told you to do that cause the meds effect your appetite and maybe people end up eating too many carbs to protein ratio, that's just my take cause I've read this sometimes happens...also smoothies are a good way to take in nutrition without having to chew...you should prob ask your doc about all these issues, just my take...

I'm a grade 3. My appetite has been fine, in fact, I gained a couple of pounds the first month so I may not need any supps just yet, if ever.  I'm shot 4/48. So far, the sx have been minimal. They were tough at first but I wasn't drinking enough fluid. Once I started making a real effort to get the proper amount of fluids I feel fine. Waiting on my 1st VL test to see how it's working. My ALT did come down from 260 to 32, so I feel good about that. I'm confident I'm doing ok. I wish everyones tx could go as smooth as mine has been so far. ( and I hope mine STAYS 'easy' ).

Good luck all !

Hi - I just took shot 4 - it's getting easier - my issue is anemia - it's kicking me to the curb - but the other sides are getting easier but now I have an antidepressant - don't think it kicked in yet - and Procrit shows up on Monday.

The best protein drink is GOATEIN. The cheapest place to get it is at the Vitamin Shoppe. You can call them for the one near you. I got it for $34.99. I got 2 cannisters. I'm stage 3 too. I just lost 4 lbs. on purpose. You take the ribavirin with fat? I don't eat fat. I guess I will have to buy some ice cream.

I get great whey protein powder at Trader Joes for 6 bucks it's whey protein. You can also get whey protein  from amazon.com at a good price if you dont want to use goat protein. It helps on days you dont have an appetite.

I made a shake with milk, a banana, blueberries and two scoops of protein powder for breakfast most mornings during treatment. I was losing weight pretty fast and I was advised not to lose any more. I didn't have any appetite, so it was an easier way to go. One mistake I made at the start was to get a meal replacement powder that contained iron, fine for females but not necessary for guys, especially those with Hep C. The protein shakes worked well for me.

You are making me hungry. Wow I think I will add a banana to that protein shake.

Oh, you mentioned banana. I must have been really tired last night.

I used a soy proyien in my oatmeal and always had a shake with the same powder, bluberries, banana and strawberries on hand just to keep my nutrition up. I only lost 15 lbs., but I was only 120 to start with so it showed. Between that and lots of hair loss, I was no cover girl!! Watch out for any iron in peotien supplements and do things in moderation, your body wont want to be doing extra work. Rocker could really help here!!!

Hold on to your horns there, goaty girl. You're telling me you're getting your protien supplements from a GOAT! I think that's illegal in most states.

SoCal: Land of the Magic Kingdom and a few very lucky goats!

Why would that be illegal?  Lots of people can not have cow products due to allergies.  I was one and now I can have milk and cheese.  When I was little I could only have goats milk and cheese.
