Provigil, Adrafanil - Helpers with mental alertness, concentration

by miked, Apr 17, 2007 12:00AM
Yesterday on NPR I heard a segment about mental alertness drugs that college students are using to enhance their mental alertness and improve their scores on standardized tests.

One of the drugs they referenced was Adranfanil which does appear to work but is not recommended by people with compromised livers.

My doc has mentioned Provigil as a drug to help my mental concentration during tx.

As you've propbably read from me before, I'm extremely concerned about this as I enter into the Prove 3 trial.  First shot is scheduled at the end of this month.

I'd really like to hear from people who have expereicne with these mental enhancing drugs; like if they work or do they work too well (like causing sleeplessness).

Here comes the pharmaceutical roller coaster again.

You got into PROVE 3??   That is wonderful!!  OH GOLLY - I think that is wonderful!  Congratulations!  Sorry if I'm late receiving that news, but I have a hard time keeping up with everyone here.

I've heard of Provigil (both my psychiatrist and doc at Duke talked about for helping with fatigue).  The other one?  I've not heard of.   I'm kind of shy of psychotropics and decided not to try it, but my psych doc who has a few other patients with Hep (one on transplant list)  says they like it  (Provigil).  My liver doc was fine either way - (try it or not).  He was not concerned with any liver damage from it, put it that way.

I hope someone here has tried it and can give you their experience.

That's great getting into a trial. I've tried with no success. I don't fit any trial parameters. I tx for 16 weeks and endo stopped tx. I attained RVR and EVR, but the psyhce sx's were too much one night (panic attacks). All I needed to do was take a couple adivans, but instead of continuing tx he took me off. So now I am not a nonresponder, relapser or tx naive. Anyway, when I was looking into a trial at Shands with the NP she mentioned a drug that professionals are prescibed when they get mentally burned out and she swore by it. I bet this is the drug she was referring to. Not much but I hope it helps. I plan to look into it when I start tx again next week. FWIW I am being tx out of The Mayo Clinic in Jax, FL.

Thanks guys.

Yeh, I'm happy about my odds to kill off this thing but apprehensive to say the least about treating again.  I suppose I need to pull my head out of my arse.

WIll they let you take Provigil on PROVE 3?
They don't allow rescue drugs, Im curious if they let participants take this.

My doc said that he would prescribe Provigil, ADs, sleep help, etc.

Rescue drugs are procrit for anemia, etc.

And he is the doctor who oversees you during the trial? That is good to know, that some "rescue" type meds are allowed.

Another thing I was thinking is you might look into some of the alternative things people use to enhance their mental clarity. I don't know how well they work but have heard good things about some of them.

Here's a link to some info about it:
