No. HCV is spread by blood to blood contact.

We discussed this back in July of last year.  It's your grandmother who has hepc and you were worried because she had cuts on her hands and prepared food you eat.
You can't get hepc from eating food prepared from a knife that had blood on it.  You can't get hepc if you eat food covered in infected blood.  Ingestion of contaminated blood is not a mode of transmission.

The incidence of vertical (mother to child) transmission of HCV is thought to be less than 5%. Maternal antibodies persist for up to 18 months, so it’s wise to wait to test the newborn child.

Good luck-

Yes, mother to infant transmission of the virus can occur. The best estimate of the prevalence of vertical transmission of HCV is in the range of 5%.  What that means is 5% of infants born from a HCV postive mother will develop the virus.  Newborns from an HCV positive mother will carry maternal antibodies but they generally disappear after a year or so I think.  Antibodies pose no health threat.

I think it’s unlikely, Kutza; but it does happen. I can think of a handful of women over the years that apparently passed the infection to their children. There’s little risk to the public in terms of your son’s occupation, if that’s your concern.

Sigh… it’d be in your son’s best interest to test, but of course, there’s not much you can do to force the issue. Manage the things you can, eh?
