Dear janice:
Pegylated interferon is a form of interferon that has been modified so that it is not cleared as easily by the body. Because it is harder for the body to eliminate, it sticks around longer and only has to be injected once a week. In preliminary trials, it appears to be very promising. There are numerous trials on-going right now using pegylated interferon often in combination with ribavirin. Many of these trials are already filled but some are still accepting new patients. Perhaps if you tell me where in the country you live, I can recommend a liver specialist who is active in clinical trials.
Good luck with your situation. I would invite you to contact us again with additional concerns or questions. You can post additional questions to MedHelp. The direct number to our Liver Clinic at Henry Ford is (313) 916-8865. We have an active group of liver specialists with an interest in the care and research of hepatitis C.
