Get some Nystatin
from your dentist or gp It helped me alittle bit , but it all healed after bustering my immune system with Neupogen
Yes am brushing my teeth 3 4 times a day. Every thing about treatment is freaking me out lol, I am hanging in there. hep arm bands are ready free,
Special thanks for your info. Just tried my prescription. Had already improved some....
Yogurt helps or a probiotic drink like kiefer but also when all else fails get the nystatin mouthwash from dr.
Side effect of the Meds. Get some Nystatin. Cancer patients use it.
Thanks OH. Will see how I'm doing in the am. I live in booneyville so need to wait till morning for HF store to open. It has improved a lot with my 3 remedies going on. Compared to the ordeal 10 days ago, this is a cake walk. Thanks again to all for your generous help...
Yes thrush is a major sx while treating. Doc will usually treat with Nystatin, that helped me tons. Also gargle 3 times a day with half water mixed with half peroxide. Burns a little but helps alot.
Liquid acidopholus in will work much better than yogurt.
The active flora is more concentrated than in yogurt.
You can get it in the refridgerated section of health food stores.
Biotene and xylitol products help immensely with dry mouth hence preventing tooth decay during tx. I use epic gum and mints available online.
I think Mary's experience relating thrush with sugar is fairly common, and it might help to try to cut back your sugar intake. I had only a little bit of white coating early in tx, but have always gotten a very sore tongue, with horribly painful bumps, from the interferon/ribavirin aspect of tx. Try to drink even more water, and carry water with you at all times. My dentist advised using Biotene mouthwash and it helps a LOT. In some stores they also carry Biotene chewing gum, which is great to have with you when you are away from home (but be sure to carry your water bottle too). Good luck!
You can get the Magic Mouthwash from your doctor. That
is really what its called and people use it also with doing
Cancer Chemo for the same reason. I have used it.
Its really helpful.
I have had the sore tongue, on and off, and at a certain point, got a mouth sore, and it was SO painful to eat, but water-melon felt wonderful.
I didn't have the white tongue, so if that persists, I would get a topical solution of Nystatin, from your regular or Tx Doctor, that's what I gave my babies when they got it.
What I did, was I started brushing my teeth, and then using a mouth-wash, about 6 times a day. I had to buy a tooth-paste and mouth-wash that was "SDL" free, because that chemical (sodium laurel sulfat, I think?) can exacerbate and cause mouth/tongue sores...and it burned!
So I switched, I didn't like the Biotene products, because they were too sweet and gooey,(although helpful) so I bought a prduct recommended to me on here, it is called 'Desert Essence Tea tree Oil" toothpaste and mouth-wash. The tea tree has anti-fungal properties.
I have been experiencing the same problem off and on since week 14. The two remedies which worked best for me, and which I found here on the board, were yogurt and biotene toothpaste and mouthwash. The yogurt helped make the soreness go away. The biotene is just a good alternative to 'spicy' toothpastes and alcohol laden mouthwashes.
Also, I try to avoid eating spicy foods. I've noticed that hot peppers really make the soreness flare up.
Take care!
My doctor told me that the interferon attacks fast growing cells and can not tell the difference between good and bad. That is why we have problems with our mouth, skin and hair. I hope you can get some relief.
Even before I started Tx I had thrush..tried everything to get rid of it..then I decided to start a low carb diet before Tx and lose a few lbs...when I took sugar and bread out of my diet the thrush went away... when I started Tx 3/23/2012, I did not have thrush and was still adhering to the low carb diet...that became more difficult as time went on..food tasted weird so I stopped low carbs , added sugar and bread back in...the thrush came back full throttle...sooo, I decided to lower the carbs, remove most sugar..had a muffin yesterday, but reletively no sugar and the thrush has gotten better...not sure if there is validity to my experiment..happy my mouth isn't burning...hang in there!!!
Mary
I have a blister thing on my gum do you think that is from treatment? Never had it before should I try a medicated mouth wash before I spend tons at the dentist? Hmmm Need advice.
Hi, I had similar problems during tx and was given a myclex prescription. I also ate yogurt every day. I have seen many people on here with mouth and/or lip problems. It is part of tx for some. I did end up getting the magic mouthwash with nystatin and numbing agents as it really hurt.
I also tried every thing I could think of and some days it did not matter what I did. Biotene is also good.
Good luck to you
Dee
It sounds like thrush. I've had it and you need to mention it to your doctor. They will prescribe a medicated mouthwash, and it will help to eliminate it. My little bumps turned into little ulcers, but the wash eliminated it.
Special thanks for your post. I have tried the apple cider vinegar, had a few small servings of fage yogurt. I actually coated my tongue with the yogurt to let it seep in. HA. It doesn't seem to be as painful at the moment. Will keep experimenting. I wish you continued success in your efforts to keep it under control.
I have been experiencing the same sore tongue problem on and off, I am on week 14 of interferon/riba. I find if I am able to bush my teeth right after eating it makes a difference, if I don't it flairs up. I just started using biotene toothpaste and so far my mouth seems happier. Rinsing with baking soda/water 3 to 4 times a day seems soothing and provides some relief, I read that it can help with thrush. They do have a prescription for oral thrush but so far I have been able to manage it with a little extra oral hygiene care.
Thanks so much. Interesting read for my Saturday night. HA...

oops. slow typing tonight :-)
During tx I noticed I sometimes had a white tongue and used a mouthwash without alcohol and brushed my tongue every night. I had a few minor sores, but they weren't a problem. It's possible this could be thrush, so I'd discuss with the doctor if it persists. Several on the forum have had this problem and used Magic Mouthwash (with Nystantin) with success. I hope some cue in to relay their experience. Good luck.
