Recent SVR folks - watch your fingernails...

by meki, Aug 28, 2007 08:43AM
I dunno if it happens to everyone, but yesterday I noticed that my fingernails were doing something weird.

Yeah... Weird... Hmmmm...

OK - how to explain it?

Well - from the middle of the nail and up, it's kind of a grainy brownish yellow... Don't think dark brown, or dark yellow... just a normal looking nail, but lightly colored.

Not really noticeable - especially before yesterday.

But ---- about halfway to the "quick" part... the part where the crescent moon is and all the way down to the "quick" part - my nails are clear and whiter.... cleaner looking, I guess.... for a lack of descriptors.

It's almost like I put my nails in Easter Egg dye very quickly.... just half way.

I started thinking about it. My nails have always grown slowly.

I'm wondering if perhaps the colored area is from the TX and when I was very unhealthy... and IF the lighter part is where I'm getting better?

Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone else can see that in their fingernails?

Hey---- everyone - have a GREAT DAY!

Hugs,

Meki

Thanks Shel - that's awesome!

I was just wondering out loud if others had noticed their nails being 2 different colors?

It's the actual nail --- all of it - I buffed it and painted them... But weird.

Hi.

It might be - kind of like tree rings can tell you when a tree was having good and bad years...

I haven't seen any discoloration in my nails so far and they grow pretty fast.  It could be a fungus however and you might consider putting tea tree oil on them every night until it is gone.

I think you have "Terry's nails" or may be "half & half" nails, if brownish discoloration starts from the middle of the nails.

I developed similar discoloration (reddish - brownish) about 3mm thick with whitish color of the rest of the nail, but still with well defined nail-moon.  I noticed this discoloration in January.  At start, I thought that it could be from my house cleaning with bleach (and I'm known in using gloves AFTER I damage my skin).  Well, anyway, my nails were described by a dermatologist as "Terry's nails".  This condition can be associated with various deceases, ranging from cancers, cirrhosis, cardiac and kidneys problems to simple aging.  But because I'm under 40 years of age, he did not think that this is due to aging.  I don't have cirrhosis or significant fibrosis, it is for sure.  It may be associated with changes in thyroid gland function (witch I developed in January), but I stopped my thyroid med. one month after stopping this treatment (on June 18th), after that my thyroid function was satisfactorily (TSH ~3.6), though not stellar.

To summarize, I have no idea why my nails have changed its color ... but I sure hope for SVR! :-)

I went through multiple Interferon/ Inferger/ Riba treatments unsuccessfully.  I estimated that I was on Interferon(s) for total almost 10 years (and I was not on low maintenance dose either) ... so I hope that my latest daily high dose Ingergen + high dose riba (~24-28 mg / kg) for 98+ weeks brought SVR (through I was given only 10% chance for SVR).  So if a change in nails color is a sign of SVR - I will take it!! :-)

I also read that these nail changes (specifically "Terry's nails" and "half & half" nails are associated with premature aging of the nail bed.  May be all these years of Interferon “addiction” aged my nails (this makes me 38 years old with 70 years old nails :-) )

I enjoy reading your posts, Meki!  You have enjoyable personality!  Thanks.

All the best!

could be a vitimain defienciecy, but of course, i'm not an expert. Are you taking calcium, magnesium? (you can run those by your doctors) I'd do a search on vitamins, minerals, nails. youre through and waiting for SVR right? Let us know.

Forgot who posted this, BUT TO NOT LET BLEACH OR BLEACH PRODUCTS (AJAX, COMET) TOUCH YOUR BARE SKIN!!!! Even if you have no disease, let alone if youre on chemotherapy. Try not to inhale it either. If you have to use it, maybe apply it, let it set, then get someone who is healthy and not treating to rinse it out and scrub it. Really, extremely toxic chemical. If you do have to use it at all and no one is around, I'd suggest using rubber gloves, not latex, and try to finish the task as quickly as possible, so you don't have to inhale fumes. These chemicals are murder to the liver, particularly if it's compromised already by disease and chemotherapy. Just my take, have studied this stuff.
