SGPT (also called ALT) is a measure of liver cell death and is usually given along with SGOT (AST) because of the significance of the ratio between the two. 'Normal' range (see
http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Hepatitis-C/ALT--AST-and-the-normal-range/show/1507850 ) is usually listed as 0-40. Before clearing the virus, my labs usually showed both #s to be between 60-80. The only time this changed was when I chose to drink hard alcohol for several weeks about 8 years after being diagnosed with HCV. They jumped up to the 300-400 range, but dropped back down to the 60-80 range after I stopped drinking. After successful tx they now, mostly, stay in the normal range. Some medications can cause a slight rise in #s but an aprox. sixfold increase above normal range can mean there's something serious going on.
