Sex and Hep C

I have another twist to the "Sex and Hep C" issue... I've had a vasectomy. Isn't the part of semen that contains any blood at all the actual sperm? If so... can Hep C be transmitted through normal intercourse if nobody is bleeding from anywhere and you've had a vasectomy?

Dear Rob;
I appreciated your question with its unusual “twist”.   Sexual transmission of hepatitis C is unusual in long-term monogamous relationships but I am not sure that having a vasectomy will further lower the risk.  I suppose it is possible to have some blood contaminating sperm but most of the studies I have seen have not identified the hepatitis C virus in sperm.  In addition, despite a vasectomy, you could still have blood in the ejaculation fluid provided there is sufficient trauma and you could still potentially have irritation and blooding in other parts of the penis.  This would especially be true if there are sexually transmitted diseases.  To answer you final question, it should be difficult, to say the least, to transmit the virus if “nobody is bleeding from anywhere”.
I hope this information is helpful to you.  If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let me know.  You can post them through MEDHELP.   The direct number to our Liver Clinic at Henry Ford is: (313) 916-8865.
