Smoking?

I remember when I was about to start tx my nurse asked me if I smoked and I said yes, and she replied "Well with what your about to go through I aint gonna tell you to stop" Would someone hook me up with a good link to read up on smoking and the liver, Hell I know its killing my lungs and heart, but I dont want to throw my poor battered beat up liver into the mix too.

Hey,,,,I know how hard it is to quit smoking because I was once upon a time a smoker.  Of course,,,,just like the drinking,,,we know its not good for us but I would think while on the tx,,,it would be too much to try to quit.  Maybe something to work on at another time after the treatment.  As far as anyone being a fool for smoking,,,,I have seen people do alot more foolish things. Its a very hard habit to break.

Hi, Sorry to see you are having a hard time during your tx. I remember it well and yes,,,,its no picnic!

I really don't think its a matter of everyone trying to give smokers a hard time but the topic of the thread is "smoking" and asking for information so that is what everyone is doing.  Throwing in facts with opinions!  If the smoking section bothers you or makes you feel bad,,,,Just skip over!  You have enough to deal with being on treatment.  Best Wishes to you!

I have the right to not skip over it.
I also have the right to respond to ridiculously empty and obvious statements like" anyone who smokes , especially with HCV , is a fool. ( somehow smoking isn't as bad for you when you dont have hepatitis)and that somehow the cost of the addiction should enter in to the equation when your "deciding" whether or not to become addicted  to nicotine. Never once as I suck fire in to my face and down to my lungs does the cost become a deterrent.

Besides , I like chasing them (non-smokers) around the parking lot one time before I let them go.:)

We have people who smoke and others that wave a flag and go to war, it only proves we humans are all jackass'and foolish, probably till the moment of death when it's realized that life was so precious and we threw it away becuase of a flag and a drag

i guess every toxin you put in your body will tax your liver. if your liver is alresdy damaged, it stands to reason any more load you put on it is not helpful. and, one must look at the cost /benefit of smoking. i see high cost with no benefit.

Why is it that you think anyone at this stage in life
gives a **** about what you think about smoking?
Do you not have more pressing things in your own lives that you should maybe move up in front of talking about people you dont know?
This is reality kids. Were old and were sick and some of us would like to take a dive off of a small bridge. We would like to sleep once in a while. We would love to not itch so bad you cant keep yourself from scratching. And , we would like to deal with out addictions in piece without being berated for maybe not being quite as upstanding citizens as you apparently are.

Bad character isn't a bad habit you can quit, it's a flaw that is a lot harder to kick than a smoking habit. I'd take a kind person struggling with a habit over an unkind, judgemental, vicious person any day.

Congrats to anyone that has conquered ANY bad habit, and courage to those struggling with them.

Shame on anyone who gets their yayas out from coming to a place where they KNOW sick and vulnerable people gather and spewing vitriol or being unkind and judgemental and rude for no other reason than because they can.

Hi Kalio , thanks for asking . I guess its obvious I have had my cheerier days. The hopeful smile that I once was proud of has been replaced by a cyincal scowl. I haven't been around much lately , I have run out of constructive things to say at this point and the result is where I am today.  Week 33 and the sides are getting worse. I had a pcr at week 30 and the virus remained detectable. I'm testing again next week (Heptimax)to see where I am  , unless I can show <5 IU/Ml, I'm pulling the plug. It will be painfully clear that I cant reach UND and stay there.
We'll see.

Like some said here earlier smoking is not a good thing for a person, period. If you have hepatitis your liver is already under a tremendous strain. As you are already aware the liver is the body's filter, so it only makes sense that anything you put in your body that will make it harder on your liver is not a good idea. I also know that smoking is extremely hard to quit but to keep trying is important. I was trying to find a link to an article I read a while back that basically showed a realtionship with smoking and decreased rate of clearing while treating.

If ya ask a question you're looking for an answer not anger that could bury you. Maybe cigarettes aren't as bad as alcohol but what if they are? This is the place to ask. I have great empathy for smokers. I live in a place where there is no smoking allowed in any building (including bars). LOTS of people have quit and I've watched many going through he!! to do it! KIds are begging their parents to start! I'm thinking there's got to be a better time to quit. Maybe try to smoke less?!? I never could understand smoking when I was a kid. Seemed there was much better things to spend your money on, another woops.

Smoking is an addiction. It may have been a choice onceback in a distant past, but it becomes a strong physical & psychological addiction and has to be dealt with as such.

Saying smokers are 'stupid' demonstrates a depth of arrogance beyond reasonable discussion.

So, for those who wish to stay within the bounds of reasonable discussion, I'm suggesting that tx may just be a once in a lifetime opportunity to quit.

Firstly, for many of us, the sides are making life a constant misery. This can put nicotine withdrawal well down the list of
'things I care about right now'. Secondly, the low level psych drugs like Wellbutrin that are [or can be] prescribed for irritability etc., also have the effect of significantly reducing cravings.

I've smoked for decades. Tried to quite, but not too seriously. Started smoking less when the sides first kicked in, and I've been able to drop down to 2 or 3 per day within a few weeks. The next step should be easy.

I went out early yesterday for a full day well away from town. For the first time in decades, I left without a pack. I did set the pack out to take, but decided to leave it. It was hardly an issue during the day. Any other time, I would have been hunting for one all day. Got home 12 hours later, and had my second for the day a couple hours after that.

Maybe its a good time to get this other dragon down and dead as well.
