Spilled half the peg

Spilled half the peg

I'm so distracted by moving I spilled half the contents of the peg last night. It leaked out after I stuck the syringe int my belly.

Anyone think I need to contact Dr. about that?

PS - shot 20 0f 48 (72)

Do another half a shot from a new vial and then work on getting another vial from somewhere, or save the half vial for your last shot (?)

Did you get moved?  You must be tired.

Kit,

i don't have anymore meds and I'm not due to pick up the new batch until Thursday.

(No - I'm moving at the end of the month - what a nightmare)

Brad, mine are preloaded syringes, too, but I have to connect the needle point  to the syringe.  I guess i didn't make sure there was a tight fit.  The peg dripped out where needle and syringe fit together.

OK.

Thanks for the advice.

I guess I got at least half the dose and the consensus seems to be that it's not that big of a deal.

But if I'm gonna try and do something I have to call pharmacy now, before 5PM, and arrange to pick up meds today as they're closed on Sunday.

I have seem a few posts like this lately. Do you think some of these needles may be defective?

You could be right but I think It's also my carelessness.  :(

(posting on both sides)

I just called the pharmacy (they advertise a 24-hour hepC hotline.) and asked for the head pharmacist (the one who did my training) and of course he's unavailable. The kid who answered the phone put someone else on the line and she obviously didn't know what she was talking about.

She said to wait until Monday and then call my Dr. In the meantime, I alerted the pharmacy almost 2 weeks ago that my insurance was changing as of May 1 (same insurance but now i gotta pay $600 per month) and she tells me they're still 'working on' getting authorization for new month's supply of meds.

I told her I HAD to pick up at least one dose of peg and neup on Thursday in time for the next injection.

She hems and haws and reiterates they're 'working' on it.

I'm so disgusted, at myself as well as this so-called 24-hour pharmacy. . .

Oh well, thanks for letting me vent. I'm gonna take everyone's advice and forget about it for now. There's not a d*amn thing I can do about it (except try to be more careful next time).

ps - ok, I haven't quite forgotten about it . . .

Anyone think I should page my Dr.? (he will get back to me)

If you think your doctor has xtra peg in the office that he'll give you, then by all means page him. If not, call the pharmacy and/or the committment to care nurse and explain the situation. Suggest they overnight you a new pre-filled syringe and then take what you missed as soon as it arrives. Also, maybe someone who has some xtra Pegasys will read this and be able to coordinate with you off this site, maybe using your doctor as an intermediary. Probably missing a half dose at this point is not critical, but personally I'd try and get that missing peg in my system ASAP. Are you sure it was actually half a dose that leaked out? Sometimes it just seems that way and it's only a few drops.

All the best,

I'm not sure how much leaked, but it seemed like it was dripping out of the syrings during the entire injection.  (I can't just jab myslef real quick, my technique is to gently puncture the skin and then slowly stick the needle in.)

I often see a couple of drops leak onto the skin AFTER I pull the syringe out, but this time it was leaking the entire time.  In fact, i almost pulled the needle out and started all over agin coz it was so noticeable.  Then I decided that might be even worse, I might lose the entire dose and it was my last one 'til I pick up new meds on Thursday.

Anyway, it's my fault coz i'm not paying attention.  I imagine I did get at least a half shot, but there's no way to tell.  (I HATE to think I could have missed the entire dose!)

The Friggin' part time pharmacist asked if I was having usual post-injection symptoms, and then went into a song and dance about insurance for next month's meds still pending.

I guess she c (the pharmacist) can't authroize replacement meds without the Dr.'s prescription - or is that NOT true?

I'm gonna call the Dr. Monday and see what he says.  (I already know he's gonna say Don't worry about it).

Thanks for posting . . . I've recovered from the shock, but I just can't believe how careless I was.

It is hard to tell how much you lost. right? Not much could look like a lot. I would recreate the scene of the crime - load a syrynge (without needle would be OK) with water and dribble what you think you saw onto belly. Look and see how much it was. If the syringe doesn't work/float your boat try to conver over to soome other measuring device.

Don''t be frustrated - this is a minor bump that you can deal with. Make sure doc is onboard for emergency measure on thurs if neccessary - maybe they can lend one or something....and I'm with Jim, unless your having probs with low blood counts, I'd err on the side of getting too much rather than too little, for piece of mind if nothing else....

I got like that with the rabbits that I train. I have a stick which I use to train them with. When one of them misbehaves I shake it at the misbehaving rabbit and tell it to pay attention or else. Well two of my rabbits just wouldn't listen so I had to seperate them from the rest and put them into another room. I forgot about them 2 rabbits for quite some time. When I did finally remeber them and went to get them There Were More Rabbits Than You Could Shake A Stick At !!!!   LOL   :)

Look at it this way - it's not that the syringe was half full nor half empty perhaps it was a syringe that was twice as big as it needed to be :)

Be well !

You guys are TOOOOO funny.

Recreate the scene of the crime - hahahahah - but good idea - i just MAY try that - take the used syringe outta the fridge (from the sharps container)

reinsert used needle

fill syringe with water

uh-oh - if i reinject myself that might coz toxic shock syndrome or something worse -

ok smarty goof, now what?

crazy - you're SUCH an optimist.  :)  the syringe is always half full or at least twice as big as it needs to be?

Jim,  this MAY work, but like everything else I've done the past 2 days, I probably did it wrong.

just in case, try skybyrdeatgmaildotcom

if you don't hear back you'll know why.  :((

The exact same thing happened to me at about the same time in treatment!  Only my dog licked it up off of the floor (giving it in my thigh!).  Goofy and Jim calmed my panic, I called the Pegassist Line, got no advice, called my doctor who said don't worry.  If it makes you feel better, I was SVR 1/07.

that DOES put things in perspective.  :(

thanks, you're right.

FWIW - I can't believe I've been flipping out about this all day.  it's gotta be the meds, right?  I'm usually such a calm person . . .

I can't even stand my birds anymore . ..

Once, when my meds arrived warm, my online pharmacy overnighted me xtra meds after consulting with the manufacturer. Forgot if they came from the pharmacy or Roache, but the doctor wasn't involved. I would think the fact you have an ongoing rx is enough. Maybe call Roache today and see what they say and then your doc on Monday. You'll probably be fine either way but maybe have your NP show you how to do the shots or perhaps you're living with someone or have a friend who could do the shots for you. Basic technique is a light "jab" like throwing a dart, not a slow push.

Be well,

Thanks for all the inquiries!  I was six months post treatment in January and earned my SVR.

The dog has no memory problems other than the normal ones for blonde cocker spaniels.  He is a big goof ball but he always was one, even before licking up the interferon.
