Stage 3 Liver Disease

My sister is 65 years old and has just been diagnosed with stage 3 liver disease.  She is 100 lbs overweight and type 2 diabetes taking insulin injections.  Can anyone explain to me just how serious this is?  How long will it take to progress to final stage 4? This is not alcohol related, the Dr. just said that it was also a fatty liver. I'm very confused so forgive for sounding like I am.

Is her stage 3 fibrosis a result of Hep C?

If so, it’s a yellow flag to initiate treatment. There isn’t any reliable method of forecasting when a person might advance into stage 4 (cirrhosis).

With stage 3 liver disease, her liver will continue to function properly. If there is fatty liver (hepatic steatosis) involvement, the doctor will counsel her to loose weight.

Has she undergone HCV treatment in the past? If so, what were her results?

I think it was the study coordinator I work with who told me that FLD will get a person into disease quicker than hepatitis.  Most of what we discuss here is related to the hepatitis c infection.  She may have acquired her disease from other causes.  It certainly would be a good idea to lose weight but I guess she knows that.

She has never been in treatment before, she just found out that she has it.  They told her that she has a fatty liver and that it was in an advanced stage 3, just shy of cirrhosis  He didn't say anything about hepatitis so I can look for another forum to discuss her specific problem.  Everyone here is so helpful and thank you for "listening".
