Swelling

Does anyone else out there get swelling of the legs?  This is the 3rd time my leg has swollen to the extreme and it itches and, I just wondered if anyone else gets this.  I am going to see my Dr. soon so I will seek an answer.   It's sore and the swelling is mainly in the ankle and the top of my foot.  this has lasted for almost 2 months now.  It has also swollen up twice before but only for a week or two.   Man, what a drag.

I saw my hepatologist yesterday and asked him about my swollen leg, ankle and foot.  He said he didn't know what was causing it.  I was saddened to find out he didn't know and he seemed to be aloof yesterday.   I have arthritis in my knee and I can barely walk due to the pain in both by legs, I even fell down the stairs the other day.  He gave me amitriptyline for the pain.  It is an AD but in low doses can help back pain I read online.   And I gather it takes a few weeks to take effect.   So I'm still in pain and have no answers, but he wants to see me in 3 weeks.   I'm just so tired of the pain it puts me in a bad mood.   I don't know if my other AD is working or not, Remeron.   It was working before my legs started paining.  But for the last month I have been irritable and depressed.   I'm seeing my psych. today and will ask him if Remeron wears off or could it just be the pain making me so irritable.  My legs are ok when I put them up and don't use them.   Thanks for your input on this.  I wish you well and we are not alone.

Sometimes swelling of your mid-section will develop with having a fatty liver that is caused by having Hep_C. Additional weight gain with water retention in areas like the legs and feet my accure also. You my want to get a Thyroid check.

With progressing cirrhosis, one of the symptoms can be edema, very similar to what you describe -- it's basically fluid build-up in body tissue, oftentimes in the ankles and legs. My husband has cirrhosis, and his doc checks his ankles and legs every visit to check for swelling.

It's important that your doc be made aware of this development -- if you have not seen your doc in the lasts 2 months while this has been going on, I would recommend that you let his office know and not wait until the visit to discuss this development -- he is a hepatologist, right? If not, you need to get one!

With cirrhosis, it's important to keep salt to a MINIMUM, as salt can make edema worse.  I hope your doctor can resolve this for you soon, and best of luck. ~eureka

My feet and ankles swell up so much you can see the outline of my socks and it hurts to walk sometimes and I get a red rash but it doesn't itch, but I'm on my feet all day.  It goes away when I have a day off and can put my feet up.  Both my doctor and the hep doc said it was from my heart arteries getting  clogged up again which makes sense since it did happen along time ago before I had stents put in and now years later it has come back.

There could be alot of different reasons for your ankles to swell.
Good luck

since you have cirrhosis it is very likely due to the progression of the disease and it is good you are seeing your doctor, hopefully a very qualified hepatologist. I am sure someone who knows more about cirrhosis will comment eventually,

Good luck - dave

Hi - When I first got HCV my ankles did swell - I didn't know why they were swollen then but have since found several references to swollen ankles.  I don't remember if mine itched or not

Good luck
