Teeth cleaning?

by slarso, Feb 05, 2004 12:00AM
I am at 13/48 and will be comming up for a 6 month teeth cleaning in March. I thought I read somewhere that it is not adviasble to have your teeth cleaned during TX. Was this a brain fog moment or is there truth to it. My mouth is doing fine, no bleeding gums of sores

Thanks!

scarey.....you just read my mind, as i made my last post about teeth cleaning every 4 months....i realised i have my next one in the beginning of march also.....my dentist and hygenist know that i was starting treatment after my last appointment, and have known from the begginning that i had hep and have never said Boo about it...but yes...now that i think about it, IS IT A GOOD IDEA while treating???...i know that when they clean my teeth, they freeze my gums w needles cause i'm a baby...and last time they bleed alot cause he accidently hit a small blood vessel or something while inserting the freezing....so.....is it safe...maybe not, i mean, what if i start to bleed and can't STOP....oh the questions......good one! i seem to remember someone saying something about this too awhile ago...

I plan to get my teeth cleaned in March. With the dry mouth we get from this tx, I think it makes it easier for tarter to build up. Only thing that does concern me, however, is all the bacteria that is stirred up when you have any dental work done.

sweetie...i feel like EVERYTHING smells all the time these days....like rotting garbage/rotting dead somethings/inside of me/coming out of me/around me/under me/above me/rotting STUFF.....all i can say, is i must continue to clean the dogs feet,( oh man, he HATES when i do that, if there was a 'bubble' of words, over his head....it probably would say...'lady, your the one that STINKS these days NOT me, so back off, before i dump your bucket of imaginary 'stinky dog feet' water all over again AND by the way...your the one that needs feet washing...not me!!!") brush my teeth, wash my socks and slippers...take the odd bath...frebreze EVERYTHING....and THEN....if there is enough energy left over... do laundry.....but...the BIGGEST challenge with ALL of this ....of course....is....REMEMBERING TO DO IT....

I have been having 3 month periodontal cleanings (scaling and root planing) for about 10 years. I have to take antibiotics before these treatments. Both my GI and dentist advised I hold off on my periodontal cleanings until I finish the Pegasys. The reason being is that we are more suseptible to bacterial infections while on tx. Deep dental cleaning stirs up bacteria which in turn can get into your bloodstream, worst case leading to sepsis. Nasty stuff. So, I'm brushing 3 times a day and using all my other dental goodies. I think some dental procedures are OK - I cracked a crown a month ago and had to have it replaced and it wasn't a problem. I'm on 12/48.

On another note, I'm doing OK so far on tx. The sides are a total drag, but to get rid of the beast, well worth it. My counts are starting to come in pretty low and GI is concerned about my platletts and may reduce dosage. I'm undectable right now - is there a risk to my SVR if he reduces my dosage?

Well, you know what horses are stepping in all day long, so it definitely could be the horses hooves! Although it should smell like sweet hay anyway. I used to date someone that raised Tenn. Walkers. Oh what a joy it was to take care of those big doggies. I was sure glad to get rid of him, but I do miss the horses. Oh well, Ring, I would hate to see you out there trying to wash the horses' hooves, so just give it up. Or, at the very minimum, I guess you could spray Febreeze all over them! No, no, just kidding.

the dossage of RBV is very important. There has been recent studies that show that keeping the RBV at the correct dose is more important that the IFN after 12 weeks. Personally, ( my blood also stinks!) I would ask the doc for procrit!

Sepsis is a massive bacterial infection in the bloodstream. The treatment is heavy duty antibiotics.

PeeBee - thanks for the thoughts : )

Slarso - My doc told me Procrit works for low RBC, but does nothing for platletts. My RBC is a little low, but not bad. Sigh...

I have to agree with you, my dog's feet smell too! I love my dog, he's a little pomeranian, Dallas, cute little dude, but his feet smell like Doritos...wet hay..or "little boy stinky feet"! Not all the time, mind you, but enough to where I know that they don't smell right! Little Doritos Feet! LOL!

No serious, if you ever meet my dog, you'd say the same thing. And, since he's a little boy, that's the best way I can explain them. My son isn't too thrilled about the expression either, but he agrees with me on this one!

I cleaned my teeth every 4 months while on treatment. I wanted to at least have a white smile if I could not have a full head of hair anymore.

You lucky thing...wish I could have my teeth laser cleaned. I really wish I had the money to have them bleached. Does lazer cleaning get them as clean as bleaching? Is it expensive? I wish that for my husband as well. You take care. Cindee

I'd also weign in on the side of cleaning often on tx. My 48 weeks resulted in pretty extensive periodontal damage. Doing the usual brushing and flossing and cleaning was apparently not enough to contain the proliferation of gum-line bacteria that happened on tx (probably because of of the IFN-triggered drop in neutrophils).

Get those teeth cleaned. We already have enough problems with teeth while on tx. If you let the bacteria build up in there you are just askin for trouble. Dentists can deal with the Hep too. Just warn them when you go in. Its a courtesy for them to be more careful.
We look bad enough on tx without havin Green Teeth and "Dog-Paw Breath".

Thanks for the info. I have been doing okay. I am finally 3 months post tx. now. I'm getting a bit of energy back, day by day. I have an appointment w/ a pain specialist on the 17th. GP says I have fybromyalgia...could be from all the trama I have been thru...tx. wasn't bad enough, but my 2 grown daughters are driving me crazy!!!!! 30 yr old daughter has been on cocaine and now crack! It's about to get the best of me. So when you pray, pls add my daughters to your prayer list. Thanks @ Much Love, Cindee
