Thursday Dinner Club

Sorry I missed last week!

For me tonight, it looks like one of my new favorites, REAL buckwheat and applesauce pancakes with REAL maple syrup, a nice cold glass of milk, and as much crispy bacon that I can cram in my kisser! mmmmmm!
Breakfast - it's not just for dinner anymore!

Glad you're back.  I missed last week too.  Unfortunately, I have a meeting tonight, so no goodies for me to look forward to.  Just whatever I can find, I guess.  Oh well, I'll live vicariously through everyone else - as long as it is VEGETARIAN!  Happy eats.

One Vaccine Could Counter All HCV Strains

By David Douglas

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Feb 20 - Work in chimpanzees suggests that vaccination against one strain of hepatitis C virus (HCV) confers cross-genotype immunity. This study, lead investigator Dr. Robert E. Lanford told Reuters Health, "demonstrates for the first time that chimpanzees that develop immunity to one strain of HCV are immune to highly divergent strains -- genotypes."

As reported in the February issue of the Journal of Virology, Dr. Lanford of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, San Antonio, Texas and colleagues established that chimpanzees that had cleared a previous infection with HCV genotype 1 exhibited resistance to all 4 major genotypes.

Thus, Dr. Lanford continued, "this study demonstrates the feasibility of developing a vaccine that will be protective against all HCV strains."

The researcher explained that "this has been the major problem with HIV vaccines -- protection to one strain does not confer immunity to other strains. A great deal of pessimism existed in the HCV field that the same problem would be encountered with HCV, since it is more divergent that HIV."

Their finding that chimps that recover from HCV-1 are immune to other genotypes "is great news for the production of a universal HCV vaccine," Dr. Lanford said, "but the study itself did not teach us how to make this vaccine."

Nevertheless, as he and his colleagues conclude, "a complete understanding of the mechanism of viral clearance is not required for the development of an efficacious vaccine."

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the GREAT article.  We need all the positive information available! You are a great source of information!!  I love reading your comments, you have made so much sence to me and have helped me several times.

I don't know if you remember my last post to/from you but just to update you-I finally got a prescription for Procrit today!  I have been out of work for 3 weeks and was getting ready to go on disibility-but with dropping to 600mg of reba and now my shot today - I'm looking forward to going back to work. (shorter hours until the Procrit kicks in)  I still think it's a shame the hoops and $$$ I had to go through to get a procrit injection. At least the Oncologist wrote a 90 day script and is letting me give them to myself. I wonder how soon I should go back up on the Reba?

Thanks again for your help and God Bless you-Kathe

While I was on treatment all I could eat was yogurt and ice cream! Now that I have my post-tx appetite back all I can think of to make is my usual Blackend Spegettios! Bon appetite!

Have a happy B'day. I'm also a March baby. Looks as if I will start tx on my birthday too, 3-12. Got the call I was hoping for but dreading at the same time today and low and behold, the nurse just left a message to call her and discuss results the only day I didn't carry my cell phone to work! Now I've got all night to ponder. Sweet ice cream dreams to all...~Neal~

OOPS I forgot this is Thursday night. I had 2 turkey on wheat bread sandwiches with my ex-wife and our 3 kids tonite. Went to hear the kids band concert and found myself tearing up. ALL 3 are straight A students 4th, 6th and 8th grade and each are first chair honors band that are going to be competing next week in UIL district competition and personnaly I may be a little biased but I thought they all sounded like winners. Sure gonna miss them when I go on tx 350 miles away. Pleasant dreams to all, and to all a goodnight.~Neal~

This was funny to read. I wish I has something funny to say or was cooking something interesting but the headaches bad today so we will have leftovers. I should say that won't be bad since it's tenderloin, salad and sweeet potato. A coworker did bring me homemade tollhouse cookies today.

Hi! Well I got a lot done today. First time I saw my phycologist. This is common procedure for the pain center I go too, for ppl on, or that have been on tx. for Hep C. Pretty cool huh? He is very knowledgable about Hep C and sx. He says that what I have is not firomayalgia, but tissue damage from the tx. He has seen this before and is tx.ing others.

He too suffers from chronic neck pain and has had back surgery in the past. He will be consulting with my pain doctor. (these doctors are in the same practice) But anyway he wants me to be put on a time released pain pill/patch. He says alot of my depression is coming from the pain.

Then I went to sports medicine rehab right across the hall, and had a wonderful back and neck massage. It was so nice.

After that I went and had my first blood drawn since finishing 48wks and you know I'll be 4 months post tx. on this Sat. So I  talked my liver doctor into that. I was told at the beginning of the conversation with the witch recpt. that it was "his " policy to wait 6 months. I said well, it won't hurt to ask! So the next day she called me and told me he said to go ahead...it would be fine!!! LOL So I did...sooooooooooo now I"M WAITING !!!!! ooooohhhhhhhhh it's scarey.......lol....just a bit nervous.

Then...this is the last of it..!!!!! lol I had to take back some pills CVS had filled. I didn't check them until a few days later...and they were a diff. color. So I called CVS. I took the pills back today..I have to take 4 a day and they were half strength, and tried to give me 60 instead of 120 (correct strength). And WE THINK WE ARE "CRAZY"....we have an excuse!!!! lol

Ya'll take care and I love ya bunches!!!!!! Prayers! Cindee

Ode to the Liver
By Marjanne Claassen

We start in elementary schools
Learning body parts in class
We feel smarter as we learn the rules
And study hard so we can pass

Hearts pump our blood,
bones hold us up
Our tummies keep us cruising
Our kidneys filter out the gulp
Our livers are confusing

Our brains are often on our minds
Our goose bumps make us shiver
We know our fronts and our behinds
But are vague about the liver

We lotion up our skin
Scratch our bites and pull out slivers
But we can go for weeks and weeks
Not thinking of our livers

Our nervous system makes us move
It even lets us panic
The problem with the liver is ...
It just seems so organic

It sits there with its purplish hue
All lobular and massive
With nothing visible to do
Its functions seem so passive

The liver is important
And it's busy -- did I mention?
It helps with growth and health and
It makes bile for our digestion

It filters out the bad things and
If that is not enough
It stores the vitamins we need
For lots of special stuff

It's responsible for hormones
And protects us from infection
It metabolizes all our drugs
And works to near perfection

But like many faithful workers
It doesn't get much press
Until there is a problem
And then we're in a mess

It's no seeker of attention
It's a noble selfless giver
I challenge you and everyone
Appreciate your liver!

HEPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. HEPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. HEPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR LYRIC, HEPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!

I ALSO STARTED TX RIGHT BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY. THAT WAS SO...........SPECIAL!!!

CINDEE, what do you mean tissue damage from tx? WHICH TISSUES?that sounds scarey...how did your dr. explain that? will it repair with time? i would imagin it would.
the back massage sounds so.........good.
i hope you will be feeling better soon. i also just got my pcr taken so i am waiting now to see if i am evr or not. though it's not early it's been 5 months on tx. so i should be clear by now if i'm going to clear at all. my blood tests show the liver is still dieing so i'm kinda afraid it's not gone yet. but, it also could be still dieing because i'm still overweight.

gosh i'm sure that losing weight for me will be more difficult than hepc tx. i gotta get those alt/ast numbers back to normal. i must become "SWL".........SUSTAINED WIEGHT LOSS!!!!

Wow. What a party. Sorry i missed it, but I went to bed at 8 after a bowl of week-old Portuguese soup.

Tonight, we had takeout Indian food and Girl Scout cookies (thin mints only, please). I had another article on cooking published in the local paper today (see Gazettenet.com if you're interested. You have to register, but it's free) and the irony is that they don't know all the research makes me queasy.

twotells - try a mixture of equal parts Soy sauce, brown sugar, and mirin, bourbon or sherry. The alcohol burns off and it kind of glazes the salmon--sweet, salty, and sharp. Marinade's good on scallops or grilled onions, too.

Indie, they may not have necks, but they do have feet. Come on out to Massachusetts and we'll cook you some steamers. They really have feet. You have to pull off their socks which are sandy, but they're good.

NY style cheesecake!  Wouldn't have it any other way.  Lucky I'm in NY! Thanks for the kelp help answer.

Vicki, I got 3 full bottles of Copegus even though I only needed 450 for 3 months. Pharmacy said they were not allowed to open them.  But the last time I did get 450 in their container.  So I wonder.  I also got 100 syringes(full box) for the procrit instead of 4! I did return that though.  I still have a full bottle of copegus which may remain unopened at the end of tx.
I did forget my pills in the begining, can't remember how many times, LOL.

Hey, I see my pain specialist on the 16th. We will then discuss the tissue deal. I would imagine tissue has to repair it's self. But the Dr. I saw Thurs. was a physcologist. He sees Hep C patients on @ off tx. a lot. He does an assessment, then gets with your pain doctor. So I will have more knowledge then. I'll let ya know. And I can't wait to get my blood tests back!

I hope you loose the weight you want too. I need to loose about 25 lbs. myself. It's the meds also, cuz we aren't the only ones. My friend who is one month behind me has gained alot too. She went to weight watchers and lost it, and put it all back on, in about 2 months! Also my sister needs to have hip replacement and must lose 50 lbs. before her doc. will let anyone operate on her. We'll pray for each other to lose weight, that would make our liver :) too!!!!!!!

Take care and have a good week-end. My husband and I are ALONE this week-end. !!!!!!!!!!!! FREE AT LAST!!!! lol much love, Cindee
