Thyroid

Should be starting tx on monday. I have low thyroid and my doc says that the tx will wreak havoc with my thyroid. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what were the problems? Also can anyone recomend a good lotion or cream for keeping the dry skin away?

Monday huh?  A lot of people begin (Interferon at least) on Fridays or over the weekends.  The side effect are usually a little more pronounced in the first 48-72 hours or so.  Depending on what your life (work and home) schedule is like you might want to ponder the schedule.  Peg is a weekly event and you sort of get bound to a med schedule pretty quickly.

Personally for me the best lotion was Gold Bond Triple Therapy Anti Itch Medicated Lotion.  I tried almost all of them but this one was very thick and didn't just rub off immediately. Make sure you put it on several times a day that will help a lot.

My thyroid was wrecked on treatment however I was on treatment for 72 weeks, so when it got crazy at week 24 I still had another 48 weeks of interferon to deal with.  Some folks who don't have to treat as long have theirs rebound quite nicely. I am sure your endo doc will monitor this closely so he can adjust your meds if need be (I am on Synthroid .88mcg a day after my TWH went to 0.0 and then hyper to 6.2, now it's a perfect 2 with the meds.)

I will get that lotion, thanks. And thanks for the thyroid info. I was not really aware how much your thyroid controlled. Soooo much to learn!

My thyroid was just starting to creep into the hypothyroid zone prior to me starting treatment and, when I started treatment, I definitely jumped into hypothyroid.  I saw an Endocrinologist who started me on Levothyroxine (I take a very small dosage) and that brought my thyroid level back to normal.

I'm one year post treatment and I'm still on that low dose of Levothyroxine and my thyroid level is normal and stable.  It's a very easy pill to take.

Just make sure they monitor your thyroid levels while you are on treatment.
