My liver enzymes elevated also. Then I stopped taking TOPAMAX (since that was the only new drug I had started in the prior 3 months) and the numbers started going down.
After 6 weeks the levels are still high but minimally,
As of 1/22/09, the AST was (50) and the ALT was (67)
as compared to 8/20/08 when the AST was (71), however the ALT was (70) which was within range. This whole thing confuses me and gives me more headaches.
What treatment are you starting? Please let me know how it goes. They detected Hep C?
Janie
I am also on Topamax for the treatment for migranes. Being on Topamax, my Dr. told me that he would be doing periodic blood work to make sure that the Topamax was not effecting/damaging my liver. On my last test is when Hep C was diagnoised, my blood work showed elevated liver enzymes, the rest is history. I start my first treatment tomorrow, Sat., and I am scheduled to take them for 11 months. Topamax helped me to be diagnoised earlier.
It is interesting that their is not a single existing drug for slowing down liver damage from HCV. My assumption is that since the market is quite large, research goes on in this area and if there were hopeful lines of research they would be pursued.
I wasn't thinking in terms of specifically using it for treatment, but if it lowers liver enzymes, lowers BMI, and even possibly lowers liver fat, then maybe those with hepatitis c could benefit from it as it may slow down fibrosis progression.
Bel: There's nothing in this report to suggest that this drug would be useful in the treatment of HCV. I assume that if it held potential, it would be tested for this.
