Transmission of Hep C to my two young children

by Lesley, Nov 02, 2000 12:00AM
I am a 30 year old woman who was told she has Hep C, after a routine prenatal blood test showed my liver enzymes were very high.  My doctor did not know anything about Hep C, and I did much research on my own.  I know that there is a 5% risk of passing the virus to the fetus neonatally.  I have two children, one is 4, the other 4 months.  Both were exposed to the virus, because I had Hep C before they were born.  My question is:  Is it true that they have a 5% chance of having the virus, just from being exposed neonatally?  I have been careful not to share toothbrushs etc. and have cleaned up my blood with bleach and a bandages when I have hurt myself.  I am very scared for my children, and also am too scared to have them tested.  I know that is they have it, they may die before they grow up.  I am just very frightened.
