The dry skin doesn't come from detergents used in soaps...It dehydration from tx..It sucks the moisture from you....so yes you need LOTS OF WATER.

Well....that was an interesting article...and seems to make sense. My tummy feels so bloated..i think from drinking so much... It sure makes you wonder. I read in the literature from my pharmacy to drink 64 oz. of water per day. I think it is primarily for sx...itching and such. But heck...if it is diluting the interferon...I just don't know. What I do know is that my blood tests came back yesterday and my vl has dramatically been reduced after 4 weeks of tx and throughout I have been drinking water. I gave up soda, carb drinks when I started tx. I look forward to what others have to say after reading the article e-mailed to you.

the brits say on their websites that us americans are giving out the wrong information by telling newbies to drink half their weight in oz's of water. they say this is way to much and the real way is to drink as much as you can to hydrate with no specific amount. gotta love those brits they are so proper :-)

Article: So how much water is required? The simple answer is that human beings have a simple correctly-scaled-for-body-size measuring system built in. Its called a bladder. If you are emptying a full bladder four or five times a day then you are getting sufficient fluid. The beauty of this advice...
-----------------------------------------------------
Rubbish. This article has no source other than being posted by someone named "Martin". I emptied my bladder more than 4 or 5 times a day during treatment (probably closer to ten) and was probably dehydrated much of the time according to both the color of my urine and blood tests run by my doctor. Bladder emptying is a very individual thing and can be affected by multiple variables including bladder and prostate size (in men), bladder size in women, infections, etc, etc. Thirst is also not a good indication because the body, especially as we age, does not always send out the right signals. As to the treatment drugs not being dehyrating in and of themselves, if it's a "rumor" as Martin says, then it's a rumor being perpetuated by some of the best liver specialists in the country. Interferon and ribavirin are dehydrating. Just "google" 'ribavirin and dehydration' and see what you come up with.

One rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in fluid onces (water, juice, etc) so if you weigh 100 pounds, then you would drink 50 ounces of water a day. I had difficulty getting that much water down because of reflux and resulting throat problems, but that's what I shot for. The color of the urine is also of some value and it should run clear as opposed to a darker color. This doesn't mean you have to drink a gallon of water a day as some advise, but it does mean you shouldn't listen to "Martin" just because he has a web site.

I agree with Jim on this one. Martin is very knowledgeable about many things, but his take that too much water dilutes your medications is a very odd one, indeed. Plus his idea that one should only urinate a certain number of times daily is also a bit odd. Maybe because he's a Brit.

The first thing Dr. D. says to me for most sympoms is - Are you drinking enough water??  I try to drink 3 liters a day. This stuff is VERY dehydrating.

But are we all not supposed to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day anyway?

Martin also thinks organic foods on treatment is "dangerous and unecessary" but he does suggest aromatherapy and evens recommends a practioner. Don't mean to pick on Martin as he does provide some very useful info on his web site, but like much of the internet, it really has to be gone over with a fine tooth comb.

Martin on Organic Food...

Organic food
"This can be extremely dangerous during treatment. It is well known that the immune system is seriously depressed during treatment, and organic food contains higher levels of bacteria due to the nature of the fertilisers employed (i.e. animal ****)...."

I can usually tell by my skin whether I'm amply hydrated or not.  If it's wrinkled (especially my forearms), I need to drink more water.  And if I'm feeling lousy, I drink more water too.  Simple as that.

I try to drink about a gallon a day. I agree with Jim not much merit there but I thought I would post it to see what you all thought about it. My doctor told me to drink more water and less soda's. I was a good soda drinker before I started tx.

I also drink a gallon (+) of water a day.  (Actually I stop keeping track after a gallon so its usually a little more).  I've always been a heavy water drinker - but I believe it depends on how it makes you feel.  I feel very healthy and if I'm neglecting my water intake, I notice it.  (Dry mouth, skin eyes, etc.) So that works for me.
