Week 30 – Severe problems with the left sinus – inflammation and pains.

Week 30 – Severe problems with the left sinus – inflammation and pains.

The nostrils are very dry and sometimes bleeding since the beginning of the treatement, but in last month that appears as inflammation in the sinus, I have received antibiotics, looks like that the only medicine that really help is – Prednisone (corticosteroids).

I understand that Prednisone  can be taken only for few days in a very controlled way.

I have heard that the  cause might be the Ribavirin and that sometimes Riba dose reduction solve the problem.
I would appreciate your advice and experience, this is really difficulty with it.

Thank you,
Jack

I had the same problem on tx. Don't reduce the Riba. Use a saline solution every day to rinse it out. Antibiotics helped me too.

What I discovered was that, in my case, the nose problems (dryness, bleeding and pain) were an extension of the Riba rash that covered the top half of my body.  I had them on my head, in my mouth and both ears as well as chest and back.  I had to stop the Riba for 3 weeks due to crashing blood counts and the nasal problems went away, as did 80% of the rash.  Began Riba and sores/rash have returned!

I'm not on tx yet, but have had sinus problems for ever. When it gets dry an uncomfortable, I have applied some natural shea butter inside the nostrils and it has always helped. Of course it doesn't help get rid of the infection, but it greatly helps with the discomfort.

Tx in general lowers the immune system and it is not uncommon to be more prone to bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

My Pegasys RN case manager called me on Friday to check in and one of the thing I mentioned was the sinus problems I've been having. She said that tx is very drying and that it affects everything including the sinus. She said post nasal drip, inflammation, bleeding and caking were not uncommon sx of tx. I was told to use saline spray routinely and that I should follow my PCP's advice of putting a little bacitracin up there when the sores get bad.

i started having similiar very dry sinus/nose after about 10 weeks
a humidifier has helped a lot-i just keep it in bedroom where i 'zen-out' a couple times a day.
also i apply lotion in nostrils to keep hydrated.
just went to doc. and he stopped me from all decongestents (like sudafed) and perscribed nasonex- i hope that helps also-
oh he also said to keep using the 'netti-pot' (run salt solution thru sinus while in shower). that helps keep sinus inflamation (inflammation) down and helps with nagging headaches.

good luck to all-
currently at 17 week 3a awaiting results of last vl test
