I answered your post on the Cirrhosis of the Liver forum as well with the contact information for the University of Washington Medical Center Liver Transplant Center.  As OrphanedHawk said, your Dad will have a tough time receiving treatment until he has been sober for a number of months.
Let me know if you have trouble finding the other post and I will send you a link to it.

I wish I could be as upbeat as you are.
Promising to quit in the future will not help his diseased liver NOW.
He should have quit drinking yesterday.

I'm repeating myself but if he wants to live he needs to stop procrastinating and quit drinking. He'll never qualify for a transplant if he doesn't.

Sorry I have been away for so long...holidays and all. Plus, i forgot my password and was having trouble logging in....But any way...Wow, you guys! All of you are so kind and helpful that I am a little taken a back by the amount of care and support from perfect strangers. There is still hope for mankind, after all. So, I have GREAT news!!! I have got my dad to promise that come the new year he will quit drinking COMPLETELY!! He even shook on it. And he has always been a man of his word. I think that it may be too late since I have seen all the symptoms before but at least he is going to TRY!!! So, now that I got him to get sober....where do I go for help? Clinical trials? He has zero money for any type of insurance and has already went to see the free doctors who just want to send him to specialist he cannot afford...He is also on a 75mg dose of methadone every day...does that effect judgement calls by the trials or studies for medicine to help him? I cannot express my appreciation enough for all of your advice and just the time it takes to care enough to read think and post for me. Thank you thank you thank you! Happy Holidays Everyone!!! Have you read replies from the previous post? There was some great info and advice. I would start there. More great advice here as well. The genotype should be in the lab copies, probably the same in which there was a diagnosis and viral load was done. Anyway, unfortunately, unless the drinking stops, treatment is not an option and the liver disease will progress quickly. Further, the more damage that is done to the liver, the harder you will be to treat if you are healthy enough to treat that is.

It would be listed in your lab work as HCV RNA by PCR quantitative then followed by a number, (example) 390,654 IU/ml or 6.4 log.

Do you have any paper copies of your lab work?

I agree with hrsepwrguy 100%. Any journey starts with the first step in the right direction.

Only a doctor, not us on the Internet, can diagnose and treat you. Therefore you need to get some type of health services. Either free clinic care or some type of health insurance. Even doctors go to other doctors when they are ill and think it could be serious. We can speculate forever but that is not going to help you. If you want help you have to take action and do something to make it happen.

If you can provide the details where you live, why you don't have insurance we can help you figure something out. But in the end it all depends on each of us to help ourselves. People can support us, but it is us in the end that has the responsibility to care for ourselves.

Best of luck!
Hector

How do I tell what genotype he is?

It should be listed as his genotype (1a,1b,2,3 ect), it is a specific test so it should be easy to find, if he has had it ran in the lab reports you have access too.

I think it is the 57 yr old father of the 36 yr old female who has been posting asking for help for her father.

Poster is that correct ? I think it is, as far as your liver enzymes they are elevated but it doesn't tell the whole story of your liver condition, if you could post more info on that it would be helpful, you are asking where to go from here, so I will be blunt.

If want to get help for your hep c, without insurance, you need to stop drinking first, then there would be several different paths we could point you too, but I don't know of any that will try to help as long as you continue to drink and do more damage to your liver.

If you would like to look into where to go get help you can start at clinicaltrials.gov, these are current trials for new hep c drugs and they will treat you for free, you can search trials in your area using their search. You can also get the drugs for free from the drug co's, however if you go this route there will still be the cost of doc's and meds needed for side effects of the treatment meds.

People here are more than willing to try and help but we need you onboard as well :)

Have a great day

I read your profile and the tragedy of hep C is all around you.  I am sorry for that.  Hopefully you can break the chain of events and be clear.  Are you a 57 year old woman or a 36 year old with a 3 year old? Sorry - just a little confused.  Sometimes several people in a household use the same account, I think.

I guess we would have to know a lot more information.  Your liver enzymes are elivated for sure but what are they normally -- or have you never had them run before?  Do you know your genotype yet??    It is hard to tell if it is the inflamation and subsequent scarring from hep C that is causing the elivated nubers or something else.

There are ways to treat without insurance and there are several on this forum who have experience with the paperwork necessary. When you get to that point, that is, ready to treat, remember that.

welcome to the forum
